A hardware alternative to the MPC

you might also want to check out www.audiotrak.de i´ve been using their maya card for 2 years now and been very pleased with it so far. their technical support is unbelievably good and they do good drivers as well. their card also got some mic preamps that sound quite good. -
The difference between PC's and samplers....
as it´s already been said: a sampler´s sole purpose is receiving midi data, editting samples and playing them back. Samplers are more stable than a computer because they cannot be upgraded with components. you can´t buy a graphic board, video card, keyboard, wireless lan card or whatever for... -

cool edit is my choice, but once again the market is flooded with several good products and it is up to you to decide. check out their demos and use what your comfortable with -

@ vitaminman, sorry, i mixed it up. actually it is cubase that supplies drivers for sb compatible soundcards. since most cheap soundcards (notebook built in etc.) are soundblaster compatible this driver might also work for your card. For me it worked and i was able to switch from direct sound... -

of course the oxygen has no soundcard, but it transmits midi data, which will cause the computer to generate a correspondending tone and play it through your soundcard. so it´s the soundcard which determines how quickly the tone will be played (latency). -

i know. i can double the speed. still don´t like that idea too much though, cause for editing drumsounds i can go with 16th and I´d need a bigger monitor to avoid scrolling. anyways, thanks and hopefully much awaited fruity studio will solve that problem -
