    MPC SYNC Question

is it true that if you make the mpc the slave and your daw the master for MIDI sync, you basically lose the tightness and swing of the mpc's sequencer for whatever you're tracking into your daw (drums in my case)? what i mean is, the only thing i use the Mp for is for drums, i do all my...

    Better than the ASR-10

the truth is only people outside the industry sleep on kurzweil stuff, its something you will find in almost every pro rap/r&b producers arsenal somewhere...maybe not the specific model u use, i know a lot of producers use their large rompler/sampler boards, but yeah their gear is great. you...

so i found out i used the same sample as...

this is one of the reasons i stopped sampling except on real rare occasions a while ago...this whole part of the sampling game seems so backwards to me. you spend hours working on a beat that you make your own only to find out the sample's already been flipped, sometimes by puff, sometimes by 5...

Mysto And Pizzi making the R.Kelly beat

on a side note i dont know what the hell is up with the mix of that song on the album, you can barely hear the beat. vocals were way too loud, i'm glad i saw this vid cause you can barely hear the chorus melody on the album version.

Mysto And Pizzi making the R.Kelly beat

cool video of mysto and pizzi making their first major placement beat, fourth track off of R.Kelly's new album. if you don't like club music this won't be your thing most likely, but its still pretty cool they show people their creative process for every beat..

    Pete Rock on the MPC

yeah i was just watching beat kings the other day, good stuff. this is my favorite pete rock video, the beat he's making at the start is just perfect

    Multi-Quantize

agreed, thats actually what i meant to say there, i always quantize the two differently and shift time them differently. not just dre and storch do that, just about all pro producers do

    Hi-Hats

hi hats can be used for a lot of things but typically theyre both a timekeeper and the biggest source of swing. a lot of people think swing is in the kicks and snares but real swing is really in a hi hat pattern that is shifted late (typically) a few ticks and that has some good dynamic tension...

    Multi-Quantize

it really depends, this question gets asked a lot over on mpc forums but there is no formula for all tracks. A lot of times I'll do 1/16 or 1/32 quantize, generally between 57 and 64% swing for kicks and something with less swing for the snare track. A lot of my drums i do in 1-32 triplet...

Im looking for a select list of sounds

reason has a lot of that stuff but yeah man, welcome to producing lol...finding sounds is half the battle, you can't rely on anyone else to help you there. i'd check out reason or native instruments komplete...something like a fantom or motif rack/keyboard will have a lot of that stuff too.

    emu mo phatt help

you really gotta get an audio interface imo, even if its just a mbox mini or something. line ins to your cpu are low quality and you're only getting one channel (L or R) so that could be an issue...

    emu mo phatt help

well remember man midi isn't sound its just control data...from that post it sounds to me like you don't have the audio outs (balanced or unbalanced 1/4'' most likely) hooked up to anything, correct me if i'm wrong. i don't own a mo phatt but i imagine it works the same as anything else...

    Is compression mandatory?

yeah, i hear you. almost all pros are going to compress a lot...if you're looking for a general purpose compressor check out the empirical labs distressor for individual tracks or an LA-2 for an overall mix.

How can i re-create this westcoast synth lead?

the pitch change is what portamento is, it has a pitch bend built in when you change notes...if you need thick sound hit up the combinator, single patches probably won't do it for you.

How can i re-create this westcoast synth lead?

i never realized this before but i'm pretty sure all that westcoast synth really is is a portamento sine wave, maybe with a little ring modulation...i would go with subtractor for that, but maybe nova or a more experienced reason head can help you out. as far as how much man you just gotta...

ouch man, you;re paying through sweetwater? i love them but i'd never buy a 4k thru them, you can get them for 900 under retail on ebay. i don't really know what effect running your mixes through the 4k will have honestly, remember there's no analog in there. not to mention you need to be...
