    Instead of boosting the frequencies that you cut in other instruments... find the primary frequency in the instrument, and don't boost or cut it... just cut that band in the other instruments. Always better not to boost if you can, unless you need it. Think of it this way, Cut to make space...

    groove is the most important for me... i do live drums on most of my shit, then use drum agog to replace with my custom drums or steven slate drums... usually a combination of both, though.

    Compression

    Like you said, diff compressors have diff flavors. It's good to learn one comp at a time, learning the sound and the way it effects the audio before you move on to another. My favorite, and go to, comp is the waves renaissance comp.
