Man this argument is lame... i cant stand when cats try to argue whichs is gonna dominate hip hop.

Sampling aint going nowhere, its an art within itself that takes alot of time to master

composition aint going nowhere either,

whats going to happen is a new generation of producers are going to pop up who are well versed in both and wont limit themselves to either style

Both, composing is becoming more popular (IMO) due to the fact that sample clearance is getting harder.

But the soul and vibe that we get from sampling can never be match so it will always have a place in Hip-Hop.

Hey I think one must really study the history of hip hop to fully appreciate and understand that these two skills complement each other "when done correctly and realistically", knowledge of past production techniques would quickly confirm that, go back and look at lots of the production in the 90's, 8-10 years ago, even a decade there was no pure dilineation in production, for example Chuckie Thompson, who was responsible for a lot of the hits from Puffy, Biggie, NAS and Mary J and a lot of the music produced with the Hitmen, thanks to Puffy and his vision many of those techniques of meshing composition and samples and the impact today can't be underrated along with some other producers that don't get credit for how a lot of the sound developed, what they were doing became a bridge between pure sampling and musicianship, the ability to compose around samples and interpolate.

Composing like that has always been used not only as a skill but a way to circumvent paying publishing if a piece or vinyl sample can be replayed slightly different from the original which in itself is absolutely nothing new, this marriage has been entertwined for quite some time now, so IMHO the direction will not be pulled either way, its the way it has been for a long time and the way it will stay, the fact of the matter there are many that can compose music no doubt, but the level of their ability to make compositions on par with what can be sampled and has been composed by professional musicians is the question, will this method dominate pure sampling of already been done music? that's really the question I would pose....

Musical production is only limited by the creativity of those who produce music.

I agree with Class, Big D and the rest of the usual suspects. But I think my man 360 summed it up best. Dude might just be frustrated with sampling. Everyone doesn't have an ear for sampling. Alot of cats aren't creative enough to make a hot track utilizing a sample because using a hot sample doesn't guarantee that the track will come out hot. There's still plenty of work to do in order to polish it up and take it to another dimension. Because your music is composed doesn't neccessarily mean that you put more work into it then the next man. I've heard plenty of "composed" material in the past year here on IllMuzik that entirely sucked a stank ass. Personally, I don't make tracks that are exclusive to samples and beats any longer. It's either 100% composed (which makes up about 20% of my music), or it is a combination (30%) samples - (70%) composition. I prefer to compose around samples and interpolate, mainly because I find it alot more challenging. It typically takes me twenty minutes to create an original "composed" track and anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours to create a song employing the use of both.

Question: Pick a track that you put the most time & work into and put that up against Just Blaze's "Breathe" track and tell me who put in more work?

....................and one more thing, go brush up on the history son, Hip Hop without sampling (creatively, not just taking a sample and putting a beat on top of it) is like being an emcee with no battling experience or skills. Something about that idea sounds incomplete. Go read a book or to two on the history of Hip Hop production...then maybe you might not come to appreciate the value of both.
