VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Thou shall not pollute the Earth. Thou shall beware genetic manipulation. Modern times bring with them modern sins. So the Vatican has told the faithful that they should be aware of "new" sins such as causing environmental blight.

The guidance came at the weekend when Archbishop Gianfranco Girotti, the Vatican's number two man in the sometimes murky area of sins and penance, spoke of modern evils.

Asked what he believed were today's "new sins," he told the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano that the greatest danger zone for the modern soul was the largely uncharted world of bioethics.

"(Within bioethics) there are areas where we absolutely must denounce some violations of the fundamental rights of human nature through experiments and genetic manipulation whose outcome is difficult to predict and control," he said.

The Vatican opposes stem cell research that involves destruction of embryos and has warned against the prospect of human cloning.

Girotti, in an interview headlined "New Forms of Social Sin," also listed "ecological" offences as modern evils.

In recent months, Pope Benedict has made several strong appeals for the protection of the environment, saying issues such as climate change had become gravely important for the entire human race.

Under Benedict and his predecessor John Paul, the Vatican has become progressively "green."

It has installed photovoltaic cells on buildings to produce electricity and hosted a scientific conference to discuss the ramifications of global warming and climate change, widely blamed on human use of fossil fuels.

Girotti, who is number two in the Vatican "Apostolic Penitentiary," which deals with matter of conscience, also listed drug trafficking and social and economic injustices as modern sins.

But Girotti also bemoaned that fewer and fewer Catholics go to confession at all.

He pointed to a study by Milan's Catholic University that showed that up to 60 percent of Catholic faithful in Italy stopped going to confession.

In the sacrament of Penance, Catholics confess their sins to a priest who absolves them in God's name.

But the same study by the Catholic University showed that 30 percent of Italian Catholics believed that there was no need for a priest to be God's intermediary and 20 percent felt uncomfortable talking about their sins to another person.

"Environmental Blight" - Generally its not the common folk that 'Blight' the environment. Its the multinational corporations that are destroying the environment. Logging Companies, Mining Companies, Nuclear Power Stations, Chemical companies, oil companies(Exxon is still fighting all these years later not to pay up for the Exxon Valdiz disaster), weapons companies(Depleted uranium weapons) biological agents adapted viruses. The suppression of energy sources based on water and salt water with zero emissions by multi billion pound oil companies. Food outlets that package goods in uneccessary waste making us the said 'sinner'
because we need to eat which means we need to dispose of the unneccessary packaging. They are even talking of taxing our refuse.
So who is the sinner?

The truth is Environment in trouble=E, Your Money=M, Mind Control=C so.....

E=MC2 Einstein was right all those years ago.

haha i saw this when i woke up. I wonder who decided these commandments and if god told him/her what they were. Also, I noticed drugs were the last one.. does that count aspirin, chemo, and antipsychotics? and who decides whats healthy

this is just silly :)

it's sad that most people want to be told whats what.. walking in iggnorance is to be blind and a ready pawn.

Coming from a religous point of view, it all makes sense...stem cell research is pretty much denounced by ALL religions, no big news there, and anyone with common sense could see how human cloning would be an issue with religous folks. Everything from the first atom bomb to the stealth fighter has been denounced and "warned" in the name of religion, for good reason too so theres no surprise here.

word, from a religious point of view.

From a scientific, it's really funny.

Coming from a non-religious view I think that as far as the environment and social and economic injustices go they have actually hit on something relevant, (stem cell research etc is another issue). I mean those things are actually causing real suffering. 2Good I understand and share your cynicism but I believe that would include corporations responsible for pollution. It makes more sense to me that fucking up the planet and treating people like shit are "sins" rather than having a wank or using contraception.

And please people, don't come at me telling me about the church's hypocrisy and stupidity cause you'd be preaching to the choir on those points.

Your kidding.... drug trafficking? really??? So if my friend does drugs and gets in my car and I drive him to the store I am a sinner??? REALLY?????

I can understand a priest to share the word of god and worship, but confessing sins to a mortal "man" is not the same as a god.

They are just losing their hype like Lil Wayne and they are making an attempt to gain some respect back...lol.

actually.. very recently scientist's have developed a way to de-evolve regular skin cells back to stem cells. The very same type of stem cells that were so controversially denounced and found in human fetal tissue. So now science no longer needs fetal stem cells to help cure cancer and regrow human organs for those who are dying by the thousands everyday around the world.

Read The Article

It really is amazing the type of scientific wonders we will see in our lifetime.. the curing of cancer and aids.. the use of man-made virus's to cure disease.. even the storage of information in the genetic code which will be replicated eternally with each cell division.

"Thou shall not pollute the Earth. Thou shall beware genetic manipulation."

Ofcorse neither one of these are commandments but a cute little twist of words by man, however both of these are covered in the bible-meaning that they aren't really "modern sins".

Chrono, I read an article on that about 2 weeks ago, I'm not sure what your point in copying what i said is though...Im not knocking what science is doing or it's benefits, Im simply suggesting that religion and science has never seen eye to eye and religion denounces alot of things that we and scienctist consider breakthroughs...thats all. I would be a hippocrit if I said that I wouldn't let science replace a lung in a loved one because of my religious beliefs.

however both of these are covered in the bible

as i am aware of, the closest reference to genetic manipulation is Genesis 1:27

"So God made man like his Maker.
Like God did God make man;
Man and maid did he make them."

So according to the Christian faith, God created man like his Maker (in God's image). So therefore man was given intelligence to think and wisdom to evolve, in God's image. Given tools to use and applications to develop.

The use of science to make humanity a better place is using the gift's (from God's image) to bless his world and "subdue it", in Genesis 1:28

"Multiply and fill the earth and subdue it; you are masters of the fish and the birds and all animals."

To end suffering through genetic manipulation is "subduing" the genetic mutations usually caused from enviromental pollutants. I do not believe there is anything wrong by this according to the Christian faith.

By the way, I am not religious and if anything spiritual!! I believe that it is a relationship between an individual and god, if one believe's in God. If God is real then he/she/it speaks directly to you through your own conscious (your gut).. are you doing something you know is wrong? are you happy? are you not? Man only needs to follow these rules! The rules apply to all believers and non-believers. If God is real, would it make sense that he/she/it would give us knowledge and wisdom to only reach a certain point and stop? I totally agree that it is dangerous but so is everything else that humanity has developed.

Believe it or not when medicine was first introduced into society the Catholic faith also stood against it in a similar fashion to genetic manipulation. Genetic manipulation does warrent very careful use and IS Permanent as long as the individual (plant, animal, insect, human) reproduces. Genetic manipulation could destroy humanity if not handled correctly.. but so could cancer, aids, and government to ourselves and our environment.

infinite love Dac,
-Michael

I'm not sure what your point in copying what i said is though...

I do not in any way intend to disprect you Brother Dacalion! I was only quoting you because I was speaking on that particular point you were making. I think it's a beautiful thing when people who different belief's can speak on the same subject together without resentment. much respect to you. -m/a

Yes Kontents you are loved! Chrono and I have a universal bond. Wings are the only way to soar like he does. Of all the things that are dear to me, Chrono is near the top. An ancient wiseman once said that if the souls of man could get past the flesh, he would surely see heaven. Angel wings dont flap, they simply soar until its time to land.

And thats my message for the day...lol. Now i gotta get some sleep.
