however both of these are covered in the bible
as i am aware of, the closest reference to genetic manipulation is Genesis 1:27
"So God made man like his Maker.
Like God did God make man;
Man and maid did he make them."
So according to the Christian faith, God created man like his Maker (in God's image). So therefore man was given intelligence to think and wisdom to evolve, in God's image. Given tools to use and applications to develop.
The use of science to make humanity a better place is using the gift's (from God's image) to bless his world and "subdue it", in Genesis 1:28
"Multiply and fill the earth and subdue it; you are masters of the fish and the birds and all animals."
To end suffering through genetic manipulation
is "subduing" the genetic mutations usually caused from enviromental pollutants. I do not believe there is anything wrong by this according to the Christian faith.
By the way, I am not religious and if anything spiritual!! I believe that it is a relationship between an individual and god, if one believe's in God. If God is real then he/she/it speaks directly to you through your own conscious (your gut).. are you doing something you know is wrong? are you happy? are you not? Man only needs to follow these rules! The rules apply to all believers and non-believers. If God is real, would it make sense that he/she/it would give us knowledge and wisdom to only reach a certain point and stop? I totally agree that it is dangerous but so is everything else that humanity has developed.
Believe it or not when medicine was first introduced into society the Catholic faith also stood against it in a similar fashion to genetic manipulation. Genetic manipulation does warrent very careful use and IS Permanent as long as the individual (plant, animal, insect, human) reproduces. Genetic manipulation could destroy humanity if not handled correctly.. but so could cancer, aids, and government to ourselves and our environment.

EDIT
I'm not sure what your point in copying what i said is though...
I do not in any way intend to disprect you Brother Dacalion! I was only quoting you because I was speaking on that particular point you were making. I think it's a beautiful thing when people who different belief's can speak on the same subject together without resentment. much respect to you. -m/a
