mono vs. stereo recording????

what do you guys do when you record vocals? do you record in mono or stereo and is there a significant difference?

I think most of the difference comes in the mix really. If you want to pan/add effects and things like that, you have more flexibility with stereo.. but I usually record only in mono.

most mics are mono anyways, which i always thought was the opposite

I record it mono then split it into stereo.

Kix and snares I always put in mono.

mono, and it stays mono in mixing with sends to reverb/delay/exciters for a little pseudo stereo enhancement, depth and width.

unless you have a stereo mic or record in the various m/s matrix styles (including ms encoder/decoder plugs) then your recording in mono, you're just putting it onto a stereo channel.

lead vocals in mono... hooks n choruses are panned to sound like stereo... grunts, yells and other adlibs are also panned at different volumes.

As 7th stated, i use the same exact methods.....If you want a stereo sound just record dubs and pan them with the lead vox.

I sample in stereo. Everything else is mono. I use pans and effects to color the mix and create a final stereo mixed product.

vocals are a mono source...record them in mono.
mono=one
one microphone=mono

width or whatever is created by use of timebased effects (ie. reverbs or delays)
