Now let me explain...this is what I want you to understand...not very many people here care about "the technicalities" of Mastering at this point. You can't condemn anyone for wanting to know and learn the process regardless of the 'requirements'. There's a good chance that everyone here WILL NOT per sue music as an only means of putting food on the table. Sure it would be nice if that were so, but it's not realistic at all. That in mind, there's nothing wrong with trying to learn the process with the tools that they have. That's what hip hop was built on...doing it with what you have. There's tons of information on the internet concerning Mastering, the problem is there isn't an official rule book on the topic.

Your process may be different than the next mans and thats ok, it doesn't necessarily mean his process is wrong and thats the beauty of it. Some say Ozone is the best, some say Waves is...it doesn't matter. I heard twice in the past couple of weeks NOT to use stereo imaging in the Mastering Process but thats one of the tools that comes with Ozone 5 Advanced Mastering Suite! I've heard that you EQ after compression but yet HarBal and several other top mastering engineers say it doesn't matter as long as you know what you're doing.

As for compression, I just don't see how hard it is to grab four main principles...attack, release, threshold and ratio. I mean if you use it enough, you will eventually get better with it...if not, then you stop. Very simple concept. Samer thing with Mastering...I encourage everyone to test it and try it out over letting someone tell them they can't do it. I feel like everyone here is smart enough to try it and if they can't get a grasp of it, they'll stop trying on their own...in other words, they don't need someone telling them what they can't do without atleast trying to help them out first. If my way of doing what I do is wrong, show me different, post the correct way rather than sitting in the shadows and waiting to ambush me, thats wack!

Rant Over =)

I agree with like 90% of this, you should always do what you can with what you have. EXCEPT when it comes to mastering, mastering is akin to performing open heart surgery. You would NEVER attempt to do that at home. Hardly anyone on these forums has a decent rig for mixing let alone mastering (minus mono and dox) the problem is with mastering the changes are SO small that your room and monitors need to be PERFECT to even attempt it. If you can't accurately hear the difference, you can't change anything properly. It would be like driving in the dark. You just shouldn't do it!

and there kind of is an official book on the topic, you can check it out here

see here is the problem, it ABSOLUTELY matters. It depends on what you are trying to do. An EQ pre compressor and an EQ post compressor will sound completely different and actually do totally different things.

As for compression, I just don't see how hard it is to grab four main principles...attack, release, threshold and ratio. I mean if you use it enough, you will eventually get better with it...if not, then you stop. Very simple concept.

See this just says to me how much you have to learn about compressors. There is SO much more to it. Every decent engineer I have ever met, tells me that they had been mixing real records (top 40 or top indie) for AT LEAST 15 years before they really understood what a compressor does, how it REALLY reacts, how it REALLY shapes transiets and effects tone.

Same thing with Mastering...I encourage everyone to test it and try it out over letting someone tell them they can't do it. I feel like everyone here is smart enough to try it and if they can't get a grasp of it, they'll stop trying on their own...in other words, they don't need someone telling them what they can't do without atleast trying to help them out first. See, I totally disagree. Beat makers need to spend time learning music, learning sampling, learning song structure, learning business and how to license. They should be making a decent income before they even attempt to begin THINKING about mastering. And at that point, they could pay a PRO mastering engineer to do it. If I had the budget I would NEVER mix or master my own stuff and many times I do pay someone else. For no other reason than I am not objective about my work and I need another set of ears. Now I do mix allot of other peoples tracks and that works BECAUSE I didn't create the music.

and BTW how did I ambush you? :)

I'm just scanning through this thread but I believe most of us on here are not actually going to MASTER our music, it's more or less we just want to do something to make our music sound much better so we can post it or release a full album. Of course REAL mastering is for REAL mastering studios, but but to me I think the majority of IllMuzik peeps just want a good sound.

Myself, usually when I mention "mastering" I just mean "I want my beats to have a pro sound and not sound like something that was just slapped together and converted to MP3".

Anyway, my 2 cents, carry on.

Yo

yes that's exactly what I've been meaning i want my tracks to just sound crisp with that ready for studio sound, but i still wanna learn the mastering thats my goal as a beat maker/ producer, is to learn how to create a pristine mix, i guess (not a mastering) finish. www.youtube.com/1984lild let me know these sound so far and how i'm doing with my technique so far.....there are a few that don't have my finishing touches on them in which i posted comments letting the listeners know which ones.

1. Whats the ratio of beats submitted on illmuzik that have rap vocals compared to not?

Well..they start as beats, first.

My ratio is pretty high, actually.

To master a beat that is intended to be sold to an artist is rather corny........ a good mix would suffice.

As stated earlier, you would just have to remaster the entire beat again....Save your time and just get a really good mix....

With that said...Ozone 5 is very good.... I tried it out already and I was pretty impressed with the changes since ozone 4....

There are "better" ones out there......I still like Waves, it reminds me of the Blackberry, still very good, but there are a ton of other ones that can be used to get the same result, if not more, for cheaper.

Well, I don't want anybody to get this wrong, dp is a great guy, most of you older heads know how far he and I go back, but you newer cats don't. There are a few cats on here that I absolutely think the world of and he is definitely one of them. Yeah he and I both come off as being asses at times but at the end of the day, we are still tight. His Kung-fu is just weak right now...lol. j/k...dude knows his shit, he just overthinks some things.

Anyway, back to business.

Both of yall are good people, and I couldnt have been the only one laughing at the sparring lol

What would forums be, without a difference in opinions and people going back and forth debating? You'd get boring threads with one post from everybody with a viewpoint. 5 Replys tops :n:

ha ha for sure. It's all good at the end of the day. And Dac and I will always be cool with each other! SO let's make this thread something with some positive real world tips. Here are a few resources for getting a better sound.

#1 Layering is HUGE, properly layer your kicks, snares, synth sounds whatever. NOW you need to be very careful and keep everything in phase to make it work

The book "the art of drum layering" is a fantastic start. Check it out here!

http://www.mpc-samples.com/product.php/56/the-art-of-drum-layering/

#2 To have a chance in hell at selling your beats you need a good mix. I have been doing mix's for years, but this book totally changed the game for me. I found my mixs improving in ways I never even imagined after reading it. It is "Zen and the Art of Mixing"

This book blew my mind completely! It is a must read if you are doing any kind of mixing. [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Zen-Art-Mixing-Mixerman/dp/1423491505/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1326861229&sr=8-3"]Amazon.com: Zen and the Art of Mixing (9781423491507): Mixerman: Books[/ame]

(on a quick side note his other book "The Daily Adventures of Mixerman" is some of the funniest shit I have ever read in my life. Like laugh so hard you poop your pants!)

#3 Mixing, composing, ETC are art forms and they take a lifetime to master. I feel like personally I am finally to the point where I now know, how much I don't know. The rabbit hole is deep, and I will spend my life trying to master these two art form's alone. I think maybe Dac is the only one here who knows this, but I have literally made a decision to give up EVERY other art form that I do (video, compositing, animation, design) to master audio, and music. I feel like I had to, just to dedicate the time to study and become truly skilled in these crafts. So know, that if you want to become truly great, you should always be reading books, always be honing your craft, always be learning the business side. You will never get a good night sleep ever again if you really want to pursue this to it's fullest. But I will tell you this, learning about synth design, learning orchestral arranging, learning how to structure chord changes has been amazing, rewarding and frustrating all at the same time. So go out there and become great! Don't let anyone stop you. Just be prepared to work your ass of forever! But you know, if you don't love it, you shouldn't do it. :)

#4 Look at the word Producer, the root is produce. That mean's output. If you have no music out, no record in the works, no artist's on your tracks, you are not a producer. NOT YET. Get to work, lets hear what you have to offer and leave the world better than you found it through the creation of art!

So that's my sermon for the night.
