Last week, Ice Cube angered a few West Coast newcomers after suggesting in his blog that, despite his veteran status in the game, he felt no obligations to help bring up local Los Angeles emcees.

"They ain't on my level," Cube wrote about the new generation of artists. "I don't even remember ever meeting these clowns or even being in the same room with any of 'em. They can't make a name for themselves so they need help from the O.G.'s. I refuse to throw 'em a life line. Fuck 'em. It ain't my job to make nobody famous."

The remarks prompted a Twitter
response from Watts rapper Jay Rock, who said he considered himself part of the "New West" that Ice Cube seemed to be referring to. "I ain't never had a problem with Cube or none of the O.G. niggas," Rock said. "But if [he's referring to] the New West I'm a part of, he talkin bout all of us he didn't say a name."

This week, likely in response to Jay Rock's Twitter comments, Ice Cube explained where his own remarks came from, and said he hasn't turned his back on young rappers, although he does have reservations about the new generation of emcees.

"Why don't I produce up and coming rappers like I used to? I got burnt out. Niggas couldn't take the baton and run wit it. I was sick of babysitting grown ass men and walking them through the industry. I felt like Dr. Frankenstein building uncontrollable monsters. How? If you DON'T make 'em a star, they blame you. If you DO make 'em a star, they leave you. I got sick of that ungrateful shit."

Although Cube has not been specific about who he is talking about, he did say he may mention them on his upcoming album I Am The West.

"Now, a lot of people want me to name names. Buy the record. In stores July 13th. I ain't naming names at this time, but I'm adding names. You let me know if you wanna be on the list."

I like Cube, but he coming off like a bitter old man. You have to let these new rappers find there own way.

Ya but on the other hand, he's more of an actor than a rapper nowadays. Same thing with Ice-T, these guys should forget about this kind of drama and just focus on their acting careers.

Yeah....but I feel where he's coming from...

He's probably getting sucked off by all these rappers so he could get them in the game.....I think he's doing more of the knocking them for their lack of hustle and grindin...

He probably just got fed up....and had to address it...

Yeah I like Cube but that was fugged up! I mean if you're frustrated and don't want to be bothered thats one thing but to publicly come out your mouth like he did was just wrong. If Im not mistakened, Cube started out with NWA and broke off from them in the same manner. Cube imo was the best out of the bunch but Easy opened the original door.

Thats like breaking hip hop ethics, the whole idea is to reach back and open doors for the next cat. Like Jay Z and Rhianna, Jay Z said he only gave her advice and pointed her in the right direction...I dont feel like thats asking too much. Im starting to wonder if Cube has started smelling himself now. A new album called "I am the West", as if to say he's IT on the West Coast, Im hoping this is just for publicity.

The one thing about the west that was dope to me (Music aside( was their togetherness. But, I understand this, "If you DON'T make 'em a star, they blame you. If you DO make 'em a star, they leave you". NWA opened up doors for EVERYBODY. Not to mention the west is basically it OWN market, if you cant win in home town, you need to 1) Hit the net 2)LEAVE 3)Grind Harder.

I dont know the detalis but WAITING on a pass from someone that has absolutly nothing to do with me is BS. Wont ever catch me doin it.

I dont really think he sounded like a bitter old man. I think he just kept it real and didnt give a fuck who his comments rubbed the wrong way. Dude has been in the game for so long I dont blame him for his resent for these un-professional, hold-my-hand-artists, and the heads that need endorsements cuz they just dont got it like they should. I wouldnt want to help them either. The music game is an extremely competitive and impacted industry, you should know that when u jump in.
Its also a sign of the times IMO, theres a shit ton of artists that just arent making the grade nowadays and I think its obvious. People are starting to get fed up with this half-ass approach on making real music. They want better. I feel that personally. As far as Cube goes, i think hes already contributed more then enough to the rap game so to say he cant make a comment like that is silly to me....Dudes a grown man, he can say whatever he wants.

CoSign

If ross can get caught up, and get a hood pass AND still MAKE and be accepted. Cube can at the least speak on the west. If he couldnt, they wouldnt want his cosign.

I mean, in retrospect....he'd be better off just not even opening his mouth about this shit cuz now hes gonna get a bunch of people over-analyzing what he said. But the fact that he did doesnt surprise me and I also dont really see what the big fuss is about. To me its like, if you dont like what hes saying then prove him wrong and make some progressive music.

Man I just don't understand that mentality, and Im not trying to convince anyone that their opinion is wrong because I have wrong opinions myself and I will be the first to admit it but...

Lets look at the reverse of this...In other words, dissing cats looking for guidance is understandable and agreeable by you as opposed to opening doors for cats and giving them advice would be something that you would frown on? That makes no f%$#@$# common sense at all. That is silly and childish thinking imo. Im not saying you have to bring a cat up on your coat tail. Im saying, even if youre fed up with mofo's, point them in another direction, give them a name of someone who will listen to them or help them. First off, you wouldnt be able to even contact Cube if you didnt have some credibility I mean thats a given so?!?!?!? wth?

My question to anyone with that mentality is simple, what are you here at ILL for?

Im not condoning what Cube said, but I also dont think its as big of a deal as people are going to make it out to be. I mean, you have to also consider the fact that everyone's interpreting what he wrote on the "internet" in their own way! lol. That alone is an issue since hearing someone say something vs reading a comment on a screen are 2 totally different things. You also gotta attach yet another variable, which is - there are plenty parts of the equation that are being entirely left out of this discussion.

From an outside point of view, and not knowing more then Ive read in this thread - it appears Cube also has a few quams with the politics of grooming certain artists along to become well known acts. That in itself is whole other can of worms and from what it sounds like, he's already had his fair share of dealing with incompetent rappers that are really just there to use him as a stepping stone....so to say he hasn't already gave the whole "point a rapper in the right direction" thing a shot is probably an understatement, or rather incorrect to say the least.

I mean, i dunno if hes saying the entire West Coast scene has fell apart and sucks now or not. But even if he is, he's totally entitled to his own opinion whether its on point or not, and in part I believe hes right - but from my perspective its on a grander scale encompassing music as a whole right now. IMO people have greatly lowered their standards as of 2010, from the audio quality thats excepted as the norm now - to the lack of creativity and originality in the music thats being created....and I honestly think that perspective is greatly linked to his previous comments in conjunction with the politics of the industry.

I dont agree with the dissin but I also dont agree w/ askin/lookin for a legend to cosign you. ILL is more of a peer thing. that would be my differintiation.

Word..

It's not like he's calling people out individually, he's calling them out collectively....Could be anyone trying to get in now, or will try in the future....We don't know what he's going through in terms of being Ice Cube. I mean..Ice Cube is a legend/pioneer in this game....And he's all about the West....So I am pretty sure he's not looking at the "New West" being able to hold it down like it did in the 90s. Maybe it's for publicity, maybe it's to somehow motivate the artists in the West to do their own shit and step their game up...

Well...It's Ice Cube...shit...he basically gets a pass on that, whether or not he was out of line.....It's ICE CUBE!

You know, at the end of the day...Cube is no greater than a janitor. Yeah he's a legend in the game of West Coast hip hop, yeah he's been in this for a long time but at the end of the day, he's still a man. He's got issues just like any man does, he faces challenges just like any other man does. To put Cube on a pedistol beyond that is ridiculous, if Cube does your girl do you say it's all good because thats Cube? Does he get a pass if he gets drunk and hits your child? Heyell No!!! Sure it would be cool to meet and kick it with him but who's gonna lose any sleep if you never do? I respect Cube for his accomplishments but thats where I draw the line.

@DOX - I respect your opinion but I got to ask you to THINK about this...(please dont answer, just think...lol) if you had to make a decision on who does heart surgery on someone important to you...a doctor that has a few years out of med school, or a doctor that is a legend at heart surgery operations? Its just the principle. Now, how would you feel if that doctor told you that you are a nobody to him and that person isn't important enough to obtain his services? Its the principle!

If the principle of said school said something it would hold more weight than if a janitor said it. The other situations are a bit different and at a extreme.
