exclusive or nonexclusive? that is the question.

i'm thinkin about puttin up a few beats as nonexclusive on one of the online beat selling sites. and it seems to me like its free money, cause your not losing anything (you can still sell the beat again to somebody else)? am i wrong in saying that?

and when i go on networkin with other cats in person and on a more personal level, i can just sell it to them exclusively and theyll never even know that i've sold the beat nonexclusively before.

idk man, it seems to easy..

Aah, you can't sell a beat as exclusive after you've already sold it to someone else. If more than one person can use the beat then it's non-exclusive by definition.

Some will say your wrong in doing that but technically your right ... If they don't have a contract
stating you can't re-sell the beat technically you can re-sell it to others because theirs no agreement
set in place ... I say sell non-exclusively to everyone unless it's a good amount of money for an
exclusive.

yeah but, you can't sell a beat as exclusive if you sold it before as non-exclusive. It's not exclusive if someone's already used it.

Look, if you want to be dishonest and sell someone a beat as exclusive even though it's already been used non-exclusively then do it. I don't give a fuck. Just don't complain when you get caught out. Smartarse.

yo hardass, theres always exceptions to every definition.

your reputation is very important in this biz espically as a producer why would you want to risk that for chump change on non-exclusive tracks espically if you goal is to build and network with cats(like u stated)

Lying about non exlsuve beats being exclusive would be silly as hell

selling beats aint easy lol .. maybe for 20 - 50 dollars. but to sell an exclusive beat to someone means they are the only ones that can use it, not even you, it means they own it cut and dry. when speaking in formal terms, you most likely dont want to sell an exclusive beat to anyone. The proper term is to license the beat to someone . cuz techinally if you sell someone exclusive rights to your track it means they own it and can say they produced it or whatver. they dont even have to give you credit for it.

oh no wayy, never knew about that. i had the misconception that you couldn't alter or do anything to exclusive beats, and you had to give credit where due.

but thanks for the heads up. i thought the majority of the beatmaking cats out there sold their ish under exclusive rights. definitely will go the non-exclusive route. it just sucks on those stupid ass beat selling websites that rappers are much more inclined to buy the exclusive beats, and especially with legit beats for only 25$ exclusives for legit beatss, it makes it tough. i'm realizing now why those sites are such a damn rip off and why the best way to do business is "in person"

and ya the chump change is defi not worth it.

Hypothetical here

If say I (nobody producer) sold a beat to someone who was no one then ran into 50 cent and saved his life and he wanted to know what he could do for me and listened to my beat cd and wanted to buy that track for 20g's would I be wrong to then be like fuck the first guy and sell it to 50(who may just run with it anyway)?

I mean thats the business though yes?

Yeah, but what you could do too. .. is make a fake account at beattraders. Search for HOT HOT HOT beats, that you can buy for the 25- 50 $ range. Buy them exclusive. That means you own, the cat who made them ain''t got nothing to say...

So you could so the speak sell them on, unexclusive an them those cats you did the beat and make hella profit of those beats.. You bought the beat ( does that mean you get the pro tools session too? )

I think you should always put in the effort, especially if you dont know if they are hot are not, but if its a US artist(to you euro dudes) def put in effort because more likely than not , even if he aint hot , they are gonna brag that they got the beat from you and that helps get your name around free. 6 degrees and all that.
Ive just noticed lately that cats hit me up alot saying "Yeah I get my tracks from my man over in(insert euro country), and hes slammin!", which doesnt impress me so much now that I know you all lol.
Im like pick a country I prolly know a better producer from it! But the point being Im seeing a trend thanks to the net of artists wanting cats from abroad , so that gets your name around yes?
