I know some no name producers on some projects that look up to 70K as doing big things in the industry after their managers and lawyers and accountants get their piece... just as a good example that not everyone is making millions or hundreds of thousands of dollars....LOL.....now me I just got laid off about a lil while back ...yes......but I was lucky enuff and blessed with getting another job making even more money, not over 100,000 but close and I agree with incognito...that ain't even enuff money.....Stress is absolutely right you can do both but you gotta get on full time with your day job and support your habit.....or just be so serious where you save enough money working where you can take off like a whole year and devote it to your grind, I would advise anyone to concentrate on getting his beats right and consistent with a library of all TOP QUALITY beats...first thing you will probably get asked is play some beats for me, trust me they will hit fast forward so quick you won't know what to do so you had your 10 minutes of fame and they go thru say 50 beats and none of them cut it....what do you do next...give them an album or something that you completed or showed your full skills on.....tell them an artist you worked with and give them a snip.....I mean you gotta have a lot more than some instrumentals going for you, regardless of what ya'll telling class, he needs lots more work just like most producers that ain't even in the game including myself and i have a huge library of at least 3000 or more beats...HA,,,,,,just take that as constructive criticism.......also the next thing I would tell Class is to get some artists and start doing full production, put out some albums because that's what you will be doing if you really want a career as a producer in the music industry, if you study someone like 9th they already put in lots of work on the underground and were known...it will be extra hard for an unknown just to either get signed to a major project especially if you have no library and no finished albums under your belt....like I said I am not playing devils advocate but putting it in a REAL perspective.....

Spoken like the truth. I think the misconception here is the amount of money producers, or even artists make. Realistically, the only real people makin the millions are the Record Execs. And what D was sayin about his peoples that produce is true. My man is a trance/House/Dj/Producer. That is where the money is at right now suprisingly. He's signed and works for many different other labels that want tracks. He aint makin a killin, yet he aint livin middle class either. but, my point is, don't believe what you see. Kanye is an example here. Dude produced mad cats. He made his dough fo shore right? Now he's rappin. Okay, so now he's 1) Producin his album and 2) writin on his album. From the last i checked, writin as a performer earns you 1 Point per album in sales,,,and I think its 2 or 3 Points per producer, per album. The rest goes to the label and studio and all that jazz that the label takes back. (Plus you normally use a record label's studio anyway,,lol,,bastards) Okay so what does this mean? For those not familiar with record sales, it goes by points. Each point is equivalent to about .99. Okay, with today's economy, it may be a lil less. So heres a few scenarios:

Rapper/Singer/Boy Band Homo:

You sell 2.5 million records.(whenever, 1st week, total, in Germany only IE:David Hasselhof)
you make .99 Cents off each album. Thats alot right? Well not really. technically you now have $2.5 million. Again, this aint the CD that you passin around in clubs. Marketing, Publishing, Advertising, "Producing",etc doesnt pay it self. Then the label gets it's cut. Like D said, lawyers fees etc. Now your down lets say, $1.1 Million for arguements sake right? Okay, this is what you do for a livin. I don't know about you but when i get paid for what I do for a livin,,,,Uncle sam takes half like an estranged ex-wife, dig? So do the math and what are you left over with? Now this is estimates but this is the basic format of the business of gettin "paid". I used 2.5 million records sold as an example but many artists don't do as well sometimes.

",,,,,,,,,,But wait Professor Stress,,,,why do they still have bling, cars, and nice homes. I see artists in clubs spendin money all around. I think your WRONG and don't know what ya sayin!!!

Okay, shut the fuck up and listen closely. Speakin out of turn will get you no Recess time, and no REESES for Dantson,,,,,
,,Ahem. Okay. Some artists do make money but not off there albums, as we pointed out above. So where do they get these nice things. In a nutshell(Help I'm in a nutshell!!!-Austin Powers reference, laff I said!):

Jewelery: Either rented or some dumbass artist went and spent most of his "new" money on a watch and Chain.<Smacks forehead!> While his baby momma is waitin on Child support. Example: Kevin federline Spears, he's just a dancer and lets say his wife is doin okay. But I saw his ex on VH1 complainin he aint pay shit.lol

Clothes: These clothing companies(and shoes) throw free clothes to artists all the time. Or if they do a shoot like you see in Vibe or The Source.(Ugh)

Cars: Most of the time they are rented. An industry friend of mine who used to work at MTV told me the secret on Cribs. If you really wanna see who really owns what,,,,look for the lisence plate to be blurred out.

Homes: Same here. Most of these homes are being rented. Think about this, when Em bought his house in Detroit for like whatever million dollars,,,it was on the news. Last time I checked nobody mentioned Chingy's estate. lol. But they do own homes some of them.

"But......................"

I said shut the fuck up,,,I'm almost done. You ever hear rappers constantly promotin there album on intervies? That proves my point above on the point system and money. But why do you think they perform? Thats where the true money comes in for the artist. Thats why acts like Mariah, Whitney, Spears, Timberlake, make a fortune. High album sales and live venues across the Country and or World. If you dont perform, and I dont mean some stupid nightclub tour like half these bone-head rappers do, you aint gonna make the big money. Look at the cats on the Up in Smoke Tour. Dre, Snoop, Em. They can back up there money talk because they TOUR!

Okay, so some cats don't tour but make money. That's where the creating a new label comes in. Every artist and there momma got a label. Literally. If ya can't make enuff on ya own because the industry is pimpin ya out,,,,,pimp someone else!

OK here is my last lil comment to Classic
Ask yourself this.....
Which is my "A" work?
My knowledge overall experience and skill in music and my beats

or

My knowledge overall experience and skills gained preparing for my Masters degree

Answer them and you weigh the option....I think you can do both to be honest just like about 90% of people right now that produce...they work a day job and they aspire to one day get on a major project..

gosh damn this is a good ass thread,

Im feeling stress about trying to do both, which is my original plan,
but point blank, my career will suffer if i am trying to break into the industry and working at the same time. All the time and money i am spending on beatmaking after hours will effect my development as a professional. Being a systems anaylist requires your full dedication

Bid D you touched on some really good points. Your right about the competition, I know I still have along way to go with my beats, but honestly (maybe it’s my cockyness) I think if I can get in the right environment I can fuck with anybody. I know I still have along way to go but I can feel this music ish in me. It has been in me my entire life from playing the saxophone, to playing the piano, to now playing the MPC. What l lack in experience I feel I can make up for in determination IF I am put in the right environment(which is key for success in any field

Here is the question that I have been asking myself
Which profession will allow me to make the biggest impact in other people’s lives??

Career
Pro-will give the the ability to travel and with a steady income the abitltiy to give to charities. It will also give me security and the ability to become a home owner but my 24th birthday.
con- music is my first love

Music
Pro-will give me that internal stratification that u can only get by doing something you love. If I make it I will have the ability to touch other people threw charitable organizations
Con- No job security, no steady income. Highly competitive and hard work dose not equal pay off. Very slim chances of being successful. I will have to work with people who I despise.

As u can see there are benfits and downfalls to both.

Class, if i can give you some advice, i would say to PRAY. Pray about it. Ask God to show you the answer. Trust him. No matter how many errors you'll make in your life, it will be a good lesson and it will NEVER be too late to make things right. For now, concentrate at school and when you will feel that you are Ready musically, you'll know then. You wont have any doubt about it. Pray class.

i don't think that signing with a big label or anything like that makes you a sell out. if anything you can just use it to better the industry. if you are getting signed then that means the stuff you're making right now is good ish. and i mean, yea maybe some of the rappin is weak. but you could at least make a difference in the quality of the beats that are in mainstream media. even if you can't right now change the overall content of the rap, you can still change the production part.

honestly class, i would go with the career in programming. keep music as a hobby. only the lucky few get to make their lives off of music. you need to look at the immediate future right now, and it is gonna be a lot more advantageous if you are workin a steady job with good pay and can establish yourself first. work takes time. that's why it's called work. play is fun, and basically that's what most of our music making is right now. it's mainly play. we aren't makin big bucks. we are doing this for ourselves for entertainment. so i think you should keep makin music for fun, but take the job in programming. and maybe you won't have as much time for music, but you can still keep it as a hobby and keep havin fun with it.

I had to make a similar kinda decision earlier this year class, basically ive had a few years out of education doing a job thats ok but its not a career i just been doing til i got my head straight !
It woz either just carry on doing the job i woz doing or similar jobs i mean its kewl enuff and im into cars so i got a link with that the pays not that good yet but it can be good in the future buts its not really want i wanted to do music is what i do and have always wanted to do, except when i wozl ike 6 i wanted to be a teenage mutant ninja turtle, but alas that dream faded which left me with music !
So i've decided to pursue a career in music id rather fail at something i love than be a slave to some job i don't like !
Im off to uni next year in london to do a music tech degree, to give some sort of academic qualification to my career well thats if i get accepted which is suspect due to my pretty dodgy exam results ! but the main reason, im going is that in london you can actually get heard, its like the uk version of NY ! If i don't get in it looks like i'll move up there and kanye west it anyway LOL

hmm very deep thread. am pretty much in the same situation as class. this whole music thing isnt even about the fame. aight maybe the money would be nice, but everytime i learn about this music industry, i begin to see money disappear. back in the day i thought these dudes were millionares, but its all dropping down. piracy, bootlegging, there isnt alot of money in the industry these days. so money wise, i feel education would provide better stability. i love making music and ill never stop doing it, but depending on it for food on the table? errm not sure about that. one of my possible plans is to keep developing musically, get a good job, save up enough money to go off work for a year and chase the music thing afterwards. there's other roads i could take but that will be determined later on.

The choices we have to make are hard ones and no one can make them for you except GOD. Whatever path you decide to follow will definitely have a great influence on you and (if you have one), your family. This music is the love of my heart; but in the meantime; I have to put food on the table, and pay rent, etc. I also have to be a man. This means that I have to be strong enough to sometimes not follow my heart and look at the situation at hand and take a different path. Like Afrique said; the industry is not getting any better. Competition will only get stiffer and more intense. In my opinion; it is better to have something tangible and definite, than to just chase dreams for half of your life and possibly end up with nothing. Don't think that you are selling yourself short because you opted to get a degree in computer sciences or whatever. As fickle as the Hip Hop community is, it is hard to just throw your life into the hands of some finnicky label exec or the public. You can be in today and out tomorrow. If you chose to go to school and get that lambskin, nobody can take that from you. Your mind and dedication earned that and it will give you a more secure future. I myself crossed this path awhile back. Take it from an experienced person. Get your degree and you can call your own shots. With the degree you will always have something in your hand instead of just hopes and dreams. I have seen so many people with mad talent get screwed by the industry that it's just amazing. I've seen artists signed and just put on the back burner because they were competition to another artist that the label already had out. There will always be that question as to whether or not if I would have kept grindin' would I have made it in the industry. But damn that! When I think about what I have achieved up to now, I ain't mad and my future is secure. I know that both of you (Class & Afrique), are both intelligent to do what needs to be done and secure your future first and then chase your dreams. I'll take you back to the old school............. "A bird in the hand..............."
'Nuff said.
