I know some no name producers on some projects that look up to 70K as doing big things in the industry after their managers and lawyers and accountants get their piece... just as a good example that not everyone is making millions or hundreds of thousands of dollars....LOL.....now me I just got laid off about a lil while back ...yes......but I was lucky enuff and blessed with getting another job making even more money, not over 100,000 but close and I agree with incognito...that ain't even enuff money.....Stress is absolutely right you can do both but you gotta get on full time with your day job and support your habit.....or just be so serious where you save enough money working where you can take off like a whole year and devote it to your grind, I would advise anyone to concentrate on getting his beats right and consistent with a library of all TOP QUALITY beats...first thing you will probably get asked is play some beats for me, trust me they will hit fast forward so quick you won't know what to do so you had your 10 minutes of fame and they go thru say 50 beats and none of them cut it....what do you do next...give them an album or something that you completed or showed your full skills on.....tell them an artist you worked with and give them a snip.....I mean you gotta have a lot more than some instrumentals going for you, regardless of what ya'll telling class, he needs lots more work just like most producers that ain't even in the game including myself and i have a huge library of at least 3000 or more beats...HA,,,,,,just take that as constructive criticism.......also the next thing I would tell Class is to get some artists and start doing full production, put out some albums because that's what you will be doing if you really want a career as a producer in the music industry, if you study someone like 9th they already put in lots of work on the underground and were known...it will be extra hard for an unknown just to either get signed to a major project especially if you have no library and no finished albums under your belt....like I said I am not playing devils advocate but putting it in a REAL perspective.....
Spoken like the truth. I think the misconception here is the amount of money producers, or even artists make. Realistically, the only real people makin the millions are the Record Execs. And what D was sayin about his peoples that produce is true. My man is a trance/House/Dj/Producer. That is where the money is at right now suprisingly. He's signed and works for many different other labels that want tracks. He aint makin a killin, yet he aint livin middle class either. but, my point is, don't believe what you see. Kanye is an example here. Dude produced mad cats. He made his dough fo shore right? Now he's rappin. Okay, so now he's 1) Producin his album and 2) writin on his album. From the last i checked, writin as a performer earns you
1 Point per album in sales,,,and I think its
2 or 3 Points per producer, per album. The rest goes to the label and studio and all that jazz that the label takes back. (Plus you normally use a record label's studio anyway,,lol,,bastards) Okay so what does this mean? For those not familiar with record sales, it goes by points. Each point is equivalent to about .99. Okay, with today's economy, it may be a lil less. So heres a few scenarios:
Rapper/Singer/Boy Band Homo:
You sell 2.5 million records.(whenever, 1st week, total, in Germany only IE
avid Hasselhof)
you make .99 Cents off each album. Thats alot right? Well not really. technically you now have $2.5 million. Again, this aint the CD that you passin around in clubs. Marketing, Publishing, Advertising, "Producing",etc doesnt pay it self. Then the label gets it's cut. Like D said, lawyers fees etc. Now your down lets say, $1.1 Million for arguements sake right? Okay, this is what you do for a livin. I don't know about you but when i get paid for what I do for a livin,,,,Uncle sam takes half like an estranged ex-wife, dig? So do the math and what are you left over with? Now this is estimates but this is the basic format of the business of gettin "paid". I used 2.5 million records sold as an example but many artists don't do as well sometimes.
",,,,,,,,,,But wait Professor Stress,,,,why do they still have bling, cars, and nice homes. I see artists in clubs spendin money all around. I think your WRONG and don't know what ya sayin!!!
Okay, shut the fuck up and listen closely. Speakin out of turn will get you no Recess time, and no REESES for Dantson,,,,,
,,Ahem. Okay. Some artists do make money but not off there albums, as we pointed out above. So where do they get these nice things. In a nutshell(Help I'm in a nutshell!!!-Austin Powers reference, laff I said!):
Jewelery: Either rented or some dumbass artist went and spent most of his "new" money on a watch and Chain.<Smacks forehead!> While his baby momma is waitin on Child support. Example: Kevin federline Spears, he's just a dancer and lets say his wife is doin okay. But I saw his ex on VH1 complainin he aint pay shit.lol
Clothes: These clothing companies(and shoes) throw free clothes to artists all the time. Or if they do a shoot like you see in Vibe or The Source.(Ugh)
Cars: Most of the time they are rented. An industry friend of mine who used to work at MTV told me the secret on Cribs. If you really wanna see who really owns what,,,,look for the lisence plate to be blurred out.
Homes: Same here. Most of these homes are being rented. Think about this, when Em bought his house in Detroit for like whatever million dollars,,,it was on the news. Last time I checked nobody mentioned Chingy's estate. lol. But they do own homes some of them.
"But......................"
I said shut the fuck up,,,I'm almost done. You ever hear rappers constantly promotin there album on intervies? That proves my point above on the point system and money. But why do you think they perform? Thats where the true money comes in for the artist. Thats why acts like Mariah, Whitney, Spears, Timberlake, make a fortune. High album sales and live venues across the Country and or World. If you dont perform, and I dont mean some stupid nightclub tour like half these bone-head rappers do, you aint gonna make the big money. Look at the cats on the Up in Smoke Tour. Dre, Snoop, Em. They can back up there money talk because they TOUR!
Okay, so some cats don't tour but make money. That's where the creating a new label comes in. Every artist and there momma got a label. Literally. If ya can't make enuff on ya own because the industry is pimpin ya out,,,,,pimp someone else!
This concludes my long ass thread. My fingers hurt. I hope ya learned somethin...
