BAhhhhh this was a tuff one lol.
I thought logically about it and think that you will make fast cash off a hit, but will pull in far more revenue from a classic. The classic will be hot and epic once released, but will also be used in movies far after its time as well as other things.

residuals for classics is always better in the long term...to me a classic is like "the electric slide song"...the original version that still gets played after 20 plus years it feels like or some ole "set it off" type shit....but truth be told, i 'D RATHER HAVE A HIT SONG THAT BECOMES A CLASSIC.

If it has to be one or the other....Classic. I'd rather be remembered for a classic. Lasts longer. Don't get me wrong...I could def use the money though, but that's short term. Classic's last forever.

I don't know why people think producing a "classic" record will get you revenue over the long haul. That is simply not true, especially in hip hop. In reality most classics don't become "classics" until the next era of music kicks in. Rock music is about the only genre that has reaped money (for the artist) over the long haul when it comes to classics. And we all know how most R&B and Soul artist got screwed out of there's. 99% of the sample clearance money for those "classic" hip hop records didn't and won't ever go to the artist or producers that made them. Smokey Robinson is like the only dude still get it! How many hip hop classic records have the artist & writer sitting pretty til this day? Most of those records were never hits and were not recognized as classics until the next decade or two and only by hip hop heads and no one else.
Having a 6 pack of hits NOW in hopes that they have the potential to become classics later would be greater imo.... (and if they don't stack that hit money and make it last) Fast money now doesn't automatically result in "broke" later unless you waste it. We've had several cases to study on "what not to do" if you want to be set for life with hit records. Do the opposite of what they did and you should be str8!

Its not just about the money, 1; its the contribution to a culture and 2; building a legacy. hits are great every album needs one, but a classic album is filled with classic songs that may/or may not be hits. I dont want to be know as the greatest follower of my time. I want to be known as the greatest innovator of my time. 9/10, hit doesnt = classic (or even good for that matter). I'd take the classik album over one filled with "hits' any day. (with the exception of "thriller")

Good question. The truth is it doesn't matter what you write or produce, if your paperwork isn't in order to receive credit for that output, then its irrelevant.
Case-In-Point: Grandmaster Caz wrote Rappers Delight for the Sugar Hill Gang, but he didn't have any type of split-sheet or paperwork on the record, so now he comes across as a bitter old man.
D.O.C. wrote a large portion of a "classic" record called Doggystyle. Not saying that D.O.C. is down and out, but he's definitely not living like Snoop Dogg.
Scarface claims to have produced a lot of the Geto Boys early hits including "Mind Playing Tricks On Me". The list goes on.
Today's artists benefit from hit records because it opens the doors for so many other ventures that bring in revenue. Licensing deals, merch deals, ringtone, pitching products, VH1 will give anyone a reality show these days.
Classics today, in my opinion, have been redefined - it's not what we once knew because music is being re-packaged and delivered as singles or package deals and not cohesive projects/album.
That being said - A group from the 80's and 90's with "classic" records can make a living touring Europe until their 70 years old.

I think this statement would make the thread pointless. In the long haul if a hit can become a classic then to side with one or the other would make no sense it would all fall down to "make a hit that turns into a classic"
Hits are like Kayne "Stronger" or a Rihanna song or even a T-pain track thats hot right now, but in the long run when 5 years goes by I doubt those tracks are going to be mentioned as a classic for that genre.
Money or no money a hit is for its time while a Classic is a unforgetable limb for its genre.

I agree ; to clarify my point : Between a hit with no artistic value and a classic with little revenue generation but great artistic value/recognition , of course I would choose the later , a real artist doesn't make music just to make $$$.... money is good but I prefer to keep my integrity.
