When you look at the rap industry there appears to be a swing to the southern artists.
I think I know why but if I'm wrong please set me straight and let me know what's the deal.

Looking at the map of the US 90% of this country is country.
Pennsyvania is country as a mutha once you get out of the Philly Suburbs beleive it or not.

1st Does the south actually have better rappers than the one's who are making it to MTV/BET. Lord I hope so.

It seems to me the South doesn't take in account lyrics or flow.
Timb can't find a good rapper to save his life. (Peedy)
Pastor Troy ruined the 2002 beat of the year to me "Are we Cuttin" thank God for Jade on that one.

Lil Jon screams slogans and lil flip well (see Too Short)
Cash Money, Master P. Not lyrical/flow geniuses.
These cat's have sold a lot of records and they played their shyt here in
Philly but I did not know alot of people who copped their shyt.
If they did it was bootlegged.
I know no-one with a Nelly CD.
We all know what happened to Chingy when he came to Philly.
They tried to assasinate him.

If you look at the succesful new artists in the past few years they have all been from the south. Exclude anyone under Dre.

Their are some rappers in the south (Trick Daddy, Scarface, Nappy Roots, David Banner) that can actually rap (Flow / Lyrics) and I have love for so don't think I'm hating.
Hey, We actually have to lay claim to "Can't Won't Don't Stop". AGGGH I hate that track.

Is it a fact that bootlegging is not practiced on every corner in the south like it is in the east? ( Philly, New York.)
Can an artist earn a living off of selling their records out their trunk?

I have heard the numbers that groups do in the south (some listed above) .
Do you buy bootlegs or hit the store when an album comes out?
Do you know people or do you buy CD's off of artists selling them in the street.

I look at it from this perspective as a major record label.
Would you invest million's of dollars in a artist when you know his shyt will be bootlegged to death before you release it. And the people in the south who would cop it aren't feeling it.

Where are you going to get sales from.

Cassidy is a nice rapper from Philly. But he already owes dough out of his ass that he has to recoup. . R Kelly on your first single. Ouch, That's gonna cost you. Swiss on production. Ouch again. If he doesn't fo 3 times Platinum he would have been better off getting a job.

I'm telling you in Philly soon as his album hit's it will bootlegged and he's gonna lose alot of sales from his own city. ( See Freeway)

It seems to me the city's these artists are from really support them.
Philly is the hater nation capitol of the world.

So I am actually very interested in seeing how Cassidy does. The hype surrounding him in Philly is crazy right now. If he does not go platinum this may be it for Philly Rappers Fukin with major labels.
Freeway got ton's of radioplay in philly and if he went platinum he barely made it. . Beans hasn't gone platinum yet with two releases. Both of those artists have a bigger following than Cassidy and both fell victim to bootlegging. I could have the bangest CD in Philly and I could never sell 20,000 cd's on the street. First if it was that hot the bootleggers would cut me in half anyway.

I went to Florida for two weeks in Dec.
Bootlegs in florida were going for $10 a cd.
In Philly you can get 4 for $10. And these dudes walk thru the hood all day.
At the Jersey mart you can buy them in bulk for $1 a CD.

If you know how little flip or some of these other rappers did it let me know. Did they buy the DJ's at the club/Radio Stations.
I know some had illegal Biz on the side, to help fund it.
That's cool my dough will be much longer down their than up here.
I just need to know how it works.

Is money keeping you from doing the same thing.

Hey like Biggie said Nickels go for Twenty's down south.

Is it time to pack up my raw power moves and move down south.
Anyone form the south please comment and let me know what the deal.

Im from Texas and what I can say about the south and the music coming out of here is this (if I say the south in this post, its in reference to TX):

No, there is not a lot of bootlegging going on, at least not how you speak on it. I mean there isnt a lot of cats running around the hood trying to shove shit in peoples faces. Sure, you go can go to the local bootlegging spot and get what you want, but since bootlegging has never become as popular in the South as it is in NY or Philly, getting a bootlegged version of someones album is not usually the first option that comes to mind. Also, these spots are only known to the cats in the hood, anyone else is going to have to pay full price.

As far as the music goes.....I dont know if you've ever been down here but shit is kind of spread out. Everyone owns a car. It doesnt matter what kind of piece of shit you have, a car is a neccessity down here. With that said, what kind of music do you think people in their ride want to hear? Some stuff thats going to rattle the trunk and turn peoples heads when they're ridin. So if it doesnt hit in the ride then it gets no play.

In the South, when someone says underground, it usually means stuff along the lines of Lil' Flip, Swisha House, Wreckshop, DJ Screw, UGK, Screwed Up Clic, ect. A.K.A. Trunk rattling beats with the bass emphasized enough for the listener to to not even be concerned with the lyrics. Yeah, its starting to change a little, but before about 97' forget about it. WU-Tang Clan? People down here would of laughed in your face if you would of showed them 36 chambers. Thats why I always considered myself a minority down here. I was checking for all the classics when they were first coming out, playing songs for people at parties that dug what I was playing but werent interested enough to want to buy it. I tryed to jump on the trunk-rattling beats for a little while, and I have admit, Master P was doing shit right in the beggining. But he quickly lost a lot of his street cred after he started coming out with gimmicky groups every week, but in the beggining his stuff was real hard. But being the music enthusiast as I am, I quickly became tired of the same tired ass themes in EVERY SINGLE SONG. But enough about me, it seems like the majority of people listen to music passively down here, they just want music to fit whatever they are doing at the time, I.E. heavy metal when they're working out, down south shit with they are riding around, country music when they're at their little frat boy parties, and easy listening when they have to do shit with their parents.

Dont get me wrong, I like music to fit the mood, but to me good music creates the mood.

P.S. yeah a lot of the downsouth underground is funded illegally, but dont get it twisted, 20's go for 20, and if your dealing with someone for the first time, chances are they're going to try and get you for whatever they can.

And I dont think there is a Swing towards downsouth Rappers as much as there is a swing toward downsouth production. Ive always thought that the beats down here were hot, it was always the rapper that was ruining things.

U fogot to mention artist like outkast and the dungeon family, who really be spittin. I see the reason that niggas don't be up on that south is because it all in the language. Regional slang plays a major part. It's just like with wu tang if u understand their slang u can grasp what's being said. In the south niggas is niggas get captured by the drums , if u got a track that can catch their ear u got em , I don't give a fuck if u rapping your abc's. I hate to say even if I am from the south, but a lot of folks here are closed minded when it comes to music

Im not from the south but i have been down there. I like the south cause they support there artist...i mean cats like lil flip and banner or bone crusher been know way longer before the rest of the united states got to know of them. I was in Atl a lil while ago and i went to few clubs and what i see is in the clubs they may have a part where they play nothing but that what i called "booty music or crunk music" and if your near a bytch you will grow to respect that type of music if your a real man, but at the same time they might have another part thats playing everything that might get played else where like jayz...kiss....sean paul and so on, non south music. When i was in the street i herd a lot of the bass booming music coming from this or that car. To me the south is all about the beats and the hooks. I feel if someone could spit hot rhymes and put a b.s. hot hook with a hot beat there gona blow in the south but you need to open your mind and lower your stanards. Some people call it saling out but i would say its more of give the people what they want but at the same time keep it whats real for you. It all depends on your style or music and flow. Me im from ny and im moving to the south cause i really see a lot more room to shine down there now days. As far as music go ATL is on top right now. Atl is just as strong as NYC as far as music and its to the point where they dont need to have any contact with new york to even get sales or radio/video play.
Its really hard to do things on your own in the east. I mean when i hear stories of this or that artist saling this amount of units in the hood up north im like "How did they do it" To me the only real indipendent record company that made it up north is Roc a fella.....thats why jayz is so strong right now cause he did alot of the shit his self at the begining and started his own thing and controls what is done. Record companys was shyting on jay back in the day and he did it his self and now he has more money then any east coast rap artist. East coast artist get sign then get these bullshyt ass record companies and reall are imprints for the major record companys so they really dont own nothing. Down south artist sale 50 gees of underground units and then get sign but they already have money. I feel Nas is better then Jayz but since jay since Jay never got sign to a record deal like Nas in the long run Jay has ahad a chance to get more money. Cats in the south do this everyday. People hate the south cause they dont do much to a song but hey if it sales and people are buying why would you change to make a few haters happy and not sale. Cats in the south know they cant rap like a nas or jayz or a kiss but they also know people in the east dont live the life they do and people in the south only want to enjoy there self just like they did in the old days. The south know what they are doing. I respect them for that. But the south aint stupid and they listen to other types of music too. Im gona take my chance in the south cause i can always make a trip to nyc and network while i can but i have never seen a nyc girl make it mothafuckin clap like a down south chick so im gona be ok down there if not anything.

Battle Points: 90
I finally feel at home!!!!!!

Just wanted to say yall made my day with this thread. Felt good to have cats from the south dropping knowlege.
Being from the south we need to stick toghter

FIRST OFF people have to realise that the south is VERY big. EVEN Though we have alot of simlarities. Texas has a totally different culture than FLA.
And each city within that partucular state has its own sub culture
ex (beef between jacksonville and tampa niggas People are getting shot up over that shit!!!). People outside the south look it as all being the same and thats just NOT TRUE AT ALL!!!!!!
(them niggas in TENNESSE are on some other shit!!!!)

Just like any other regions music(east, west, etc), U have to distinguish southern commerical music from the underground scene. There are alot of artists out right now using the souths name in vain.
U gotta seperate the real from the fake. BUT trust me, as all of yall should already know, shit IS real down here and niggas CAN spit!!!!!

look out for T.I. man, he has been spitting that fire for a while down here. Get his first album. He is killing niggas on the lyrical tip. Plus he is doing it with his southern style

my currnet fav rappers

outKast(of course) all there albums stankonia was not there first ONE!!!
lil Flip
J.T. Money (ATL transplant)
pitbull(new rapper out of MIA)
Trick daddy
david banner(yes sir!!!)
bun B
Eight ball MJG
i can go on and on........................

One time for the south baby and them FLA boys!!!!!

I have a question for you odyessy.....or anybody from the south but since the person the question is about is in Atl right i would shoot the question at you first. I have a good friend of mines that is from new york but has live in atl for 3 years now and in the future i plan to move to alt myself. i will say that my beats arent new york base sounding but my boy being he isnt from the south isnt really a south sounding rapper even if now days to me he is sounding lil like a south cat than a new york cat to me but yall can tell hes not from the south. I think if my boy would have stayed in new york he would have had a chance to get a record deal up here but because of urban life troubles his peoples ship him off to the south to live with his aunt. I plan to produce and manage him myself. One thing we was thinking about was maybe starting small but doing it all our self and starting a record company. Do you think it is possible for a new york rasied artist to come to a place like Atl or even the south and create a buzz from the ground up to the point he could do the indiependent thing his self and get money or would it be best to try to shop him to record companys and just look at getting sign like most up north artist do.

Young... what is his name??? Ill be able to tell you how far out there he is down here... I know he can get a deal down here he just needs to hook up with the right people... Theres folks all over down here from
NY,NJ,DC,Mich,Bost . im mean everywhere... ask him if hes been to lil 5 points yet... if he has ill tell him exactlly who to hook with... The south is
so versitile now... Ive said it before i love UpNorth head bangin grimy
shit!!! and i was born and raised in ATL!!! been to NY many times luv it
there too!!! my aunty stays up there...... Anyways Yea if my boy cant
hook him up ill give him a Listen and we can go from there... As far as independant yea its easier down here to an extent But, Like in NY theres
all kinda folks startin record lables and all kinda bullshit and im here to tell ya Its BULLSHIT.. they got trashy beats.. tryin to be like lil Jon and BoneCrusha... Thats why its hurtin Folks cause everyone is on that Yellin shit now!!! Tha blinged out Quad Comercial shit!!!! .... So if your original hell yea you gotta a hella better chance down here than in NY...
As far as Ground up, theres folks some ive know for years and years
Now doing tha same thing your gonna try to do.... My shit has really takein off down here Tha whole North South Style merging that i thought
would never work is jumpin off!!!! For years they didnt want to hear it
but now thats all they want!!!! hot97.5,88.5,107.5 most all the mainstream and Underground Radio stations are eattin my shit up right now.... When you finally get your foot in tha door KICK THAT MUTHAFUCKA OFF THA HINGES!!!! Cause if your dont hit right down here
they will Backlist ya !!!!!! But yea Try it do your reserch to tha t, and if you need some hook ups hit me and ill see what i can do!!!!!

Peace!!!!!!

Thing is about the south is we click up because we so used to not gettin play anywhere else thats why theres so much luv down here aside from that there are sooooo many rappers in NY sometimes I wonder how yall pick through who's talented and who's not down here if you can rap you can rap if not you dont fuck with it. My two cents for all my dirty south playaz and hustlas gotta love them atl niggas they just buck wild i was at this club called t town the other night and some atl niggas was up in there crunk as hell bouncin all over the dance floors (I wouldve stayed on the floor with them but Im a lil nigga and them dudes was huge and there was like 50 of them) stompin and shit just tossin my lil ass around lol. Anyways than that I dont think ya boy from NY is gonna have too much trouble down south like my boy odessy said its so diverse down here you'll find people born and raised in the south that bump the hell outta eastcoast rap (I do sometimes) as a matter of fact the fact that he's from NY might perpetuate his career I dun know.
