@Formant - No the joke is still on you if you make HIP HOP beats in that freq range PERIOD! But whatever floats your boat. =)

The k&h's? you mean ? That was in our controlroom, had someone bring in the focals for a shootout. The k&h came out far more straight since its a 3 way with a good mid driver which is always going to be a problem with 2 way speakers managing the x-over. The focals add more low end but its not really the proper display you'd look for (

old pic, but this is the room

Good for mixing, now adapting for mastering aswell:)

Period ? floats my boat ? no noobtalk plz lol
It has nothing to do with genre, this isnt a personal preference im sharing, its FACTUAL.

The more you become aware of the mixing and mastering game, the more you realise that there is no differences in genre upon applying any of the beneficial processing ethics. There is NO such thing as a perfect near, mid or farfield, reference monitor dedicated to hiphop beats. lol..that bs.

Good monitors cater to all genre with additional criteria that genres like classical and jazz have a preference for monitors that dont hype at all and process through gear which is preferably of a transformerless design. But that same gear is perfectly suitable to use with the dance genre (which hiphop basicaly is). Its just that, lets say, a mackie hr would be fine, even though its hyped as hell, for hiphop but not for classical/jazz. High end outboard processing in 90% of the case caters to high range transparency(speed needed to articulate the transcients properly) and itb processing is perfect for dance (low end processing).
These are all facts!

Considering your point of view, do you really think people listen to hiphop the way us bedroom techies sit in our sweetspot in the display of nearfields ? People dont have nearfields in their car, in their livingroom or in the club. It safe to say that whomever is going to hear your music has a setup far from perfect and mostly commonly come close the range you redicule. The auratones/avatones shows you whats going on in your mix in the real world, which is a great aid.

Yea the Avatones are nice, the best monitors I have ever heard are Focal. But they may be out of your budget. But holy cow, they blew my mind!

lmao!!!! ur jokin right... i can get a used Lexus for that price... lol

on the real, i agree with dp.. dont go cheap.. do as much research that u can... i didnt tell anyone, but i applied for the musician's friend credit card.. the one where u have a whole year to pay, and i bought the ADAM A7X's... they live up to all the hype to me... they cost me $1,298.00, and im more than satisfied! i did heavy research on them for 3-4 months, then once i got the card i decided to get them... one of my better purchases over the years... now, if only "The Beat Thang" was there... lol

:) re201s, korg and dynacord tape delays <3
unfortunately not ours hehe

As you might've guessed from the setup, we were recording a dub/roots band with the controls on the mixwizard.

Ive always wanted to check those out, imo jbl doesn great work under the $1k budget, highly underrated.

@slick; thats a good effort. I assume you're in a small room which makes the 7's a very good choice indeed. Not thought about a little sub just for a bit more bottom or are they sufficient enough to deliver the low end ?

i have a pair of NS10s, and the Yammy SW10 sub... had them both for yrs... the Adams are very clean and bring a richness i would hear only at the club, since ive only had NS10s my whole life... i havent hooked my sub up, but yes, im in a small room, so the Adams are doin a great job.. wouldnt trade/sell em for nothin.

Now this is something I could work with, slightly better freq. range, a little louder(eventhough I'm not looking for volume) and they offer a matching jbl sub, a little more expensive but appears to be well worth it. I'm gonna give my Sweetwater Engineer a call on this one. Thanks for the info.

^^^ thats a good setup with ns10's on the side, i'd definitly would have a go with the sub and find a suitable crossover setting on it.
I had some time to spend on MSP5/MSP7 + sw10 and thats a beastly little sub, so go use it in subtle fashion (though i think you know this by now firsthand :).

The thing with me is, I don't think it's very logical to spend a lot of money (at this time) on monitors in my specific environment...The acoustics in the room where (whatever I get) are just so-so. I have a vaulted ceiling and angled walls (which is a plus over it being square...) but, it's far from being "ideal for sound". So to go out and spend major bucks, even with sound treatment all over the room (which isn't going to happen) would be senseless imo. I mean one monitor is going to be directly in a corner, not by choice but necessity - so thats what Im working with right now. If I ever move again, and have a better "sound" environment then yeah, I'll consider some better gear but for now...hell no! lol

^^^ key to that is kinda what slick did, get small speakers suited to the room size. Another idea is to get a behringer dec2496

This could do your setup justice for a fraction of the money needed to get acoustics done(eventhough this tool is still applicable after done acoustic treatment).
