Man, EQing these things are getting me pissed and I know I already made a thread about it, but I can't seem to get my mixes sounding like everyone elses with the drums kicking through nicely. Also, do you guys just lay one compression on a kick for example or multiple compressors? ANYTHING will be appreciated.

I usuially mix as I create it. Placing in things and tuning them right then and there. Then again you never know how you will need to tune it specifically until you get close to finished, usuially. Also.. my projects have been booty for the most part anyway so i might not know what i'm talking about. although my day is coming!

they key is eq,layering and compression, i dunno whut type of sampler,software ur using but, theyre will usually be presets for compressing drums, like if u got a drum sample in audtion u can go to , amplitude,dynamics processing, and theyll be a preset right there for compressing drums, from there u can tweak their setting and get it to sound like u want, layering is key too, u just gutta fuck around man trust me once u start experiemnting ull see how easy it isSeoul P said:

the thing about mixing and compression and eq and all that is everybody will give a different answer. so just search google for diff shit and then try out all the different things they say and thru all of them you'll find what you like and dislike and eventually your own mixing style will develop.

lol, trust me man, I've read up on it a bunch of times and printed off many artciles and tips on how to get my EQing and Compression right so don't tell me that I'm just using you guys to answer my questions. The reason I made this thread was to find out what YOU GUYS do to make your beats sound so crisp and having the drums bumping through so I can go out and try it on my own.
I never said I knew it all man, I was just mentioning that because that was the first time I've heard someone say that compression isn't needed in Hip-Hop production.
And yeah, I forgot all about layering tracks. Thanks guys.
That doesn't make since cuz answers come from help and no one can teach you skills and if I was lazy then I wouldn't even have bothered to ask but nah man, I want to learn more about this.

I gave you some advice. I told you about layering and how compression is overused, but you came back with some "industry producers" talk.
This has been talked about before, so ran an illmuzik search for you, which should be done before you post.

Man, a Kick compression is not always the answer. Whenever I make a sampled beat (usually on Fruity Loops) I hardly ever use a Kick compression. I use a multi-pressor on the overall mix but never a direct compression on any one sound. Try that, it helps to bring out the levels and it comes out shining nice. The way I do it is like this. During the beat I usually mix as I go, like Chrono. When I get to a certain point in the beat where I feel a sound needs more punch I just add that eq. After I do that to any sounds that I feel need it. I mix the master track with a Parametric EQ and use a multi-pressor. The thing with this and all compression is u don't want to over use. When you over use you get that nasty muddy pumping sound that tears your mix apart. Just go easy with it and use very little (harldy noticeable) if at all..
Ah, alright, I got it now. Less is more. Thanks, I'm gonna try and put that into my next beat and thanks for clarifying everybody, cuz the articles I've read said that compression is necessary for Hip-Hop production, but I'm def. gonna try what you guys mentioned.
