What nerdy thing are you doing lately (musically speaking)

deep diving into my MU50 with my eyeball on the QY100 that arrived today.

    Today's generic music

As much as folks like to hate on "gatekeepers", they're what kept hip hop in check back inna day. Everybody couldn't just get on like they can now so there was more vetting of music happening and as a result, the shit was kept fresh and copycats were at a minimum. Now everybody spits with the...

    What gear is everybody rocking?

Waiting on a Yamaha QY100 to get here. Saw it in a shop while I was at home in MI last week and meant to go back to get it (shit was only $199). Called 'em up and now it's being shipped out to me.

    Lets talk Linux

Nah, I take the hardware approach when it comes to VST's: Is the new joint so overwhelmingly better that I really need it, or can I dive deeper into what I currently have and extract more from it?

The 10 drum machines that changed musical history

I would almost think the Roland R8/R8mkII deserved a mention. Those things were studio workhorses in the 90's and they were touched by Roger Linn himself.

    Lets talk Linux

I don't really use newer stuff. I have plugins that work for me, some of which date back to the late 90's. I was on that "latest, greatest" wave for years and ended up spending a lot of money on upgrading plugins or buying new plugins that simply weren't useful; they were just new. So, I looked...

    Lets talk Linux

Windows XP SP3. My DAW isn't attached to my network or the internet, so I don't have viruses and whatnot that to worry about. My DAW of choice is Sonar 8 PE, though I do have FL10 and Cubase SX3 installed. The main reason I use XP is because of my audio interface/control surface: A Tascam...

    Lets talk Linux

I've been using Linux since the late 90's, professionally since about 01. I've tried all manner of DAW's and whatnot under Linux and I simply don't get the allure of having to fight with config files and shit just to make music. That plus there's the whole issue of native VST support which...

    Lets talk Linux

Be glad you didn't come up in the 80's, 'cause you definitely had to. Back then I learned to program not just BASIC and Pascal, but 6502 machine language for my Atari 800XL and the Apple ]['s we had at school.

Let's Talk About FL Studio... (video)

Granted, I never upgraded past FL10, but one of the biggest issues I've always had with it was recording linear tracks as opposed to patterns. In Sonar, I have a pattern tool that I can use for my drum tracks or samples, etc. But when I need a linear track to play on, I simply click and record...

    Giving audio engineers panic attacks

"Condenser mics condense the sound, while dynamic mics are more dynamic!" - Former salesman I worked with discussing with a customer what mic he should buy to take to a recording session.

    Lets talk about playing live

I had an older one. Caught it on sale at a pawn shop and copped. I used it mostly on basses and kicks. That night I had it on one of the outputs on the Sequential for bass. Shitty pic related, my rack at that point with the Rat next to the R8 and in front of the MIDIMan MIDI Thru box.

    Lets talk about playing live

Not hip hop, but I did some live Techno stuff years ago in the late 90's with my old Roland R8 w/Electronic card, Sequential Multi-Trak, a Peavey Deltafex Twin, and a ProCo Rat distortion pedal. Ran it all through a Peavey Unity 500 mixer (4 outs from the Roland, 6 outs from the Sequential)...

Why do people buy Apple products?

You can't and you know that. Mac's no longer use Intel processors so there's no way to do a direct comparison anymore. I'm also a former VCP holder (4) and I work in esx and vsphere day-to-day for one of my clients. I'm probably going to take 7 towards the end of this year after I get Azure...

Why do people buy Apple products?

I'll chime in here: Owning Apple products is seen as a "flex", as the young folks like to say. It's a way to say "I got money" just like a Gucci belt, a bottle of Henney, or Balenciaga shoes. Interestingly enough, the two largest groups of iPhone owners are those in the upper middle class...

    What gear is everybody rocking?

Once I got the sub integrated sound-wise, I'm happy with it. The sub provided a very needed sonic anchor, it just took some time and a lot of listening to stuff through it to get it dialed in just right. I have a newer pair of Mackie CR3's that I got to replace the pair with the blown tweeters...

What you use to make beats is very important

True, but the MPC 60/60 II are also 12 bit but they don't sound quite as crunchy as the sp1200 AND their sequencer has a different feel to it. This is as much about the sound as it is about the sequencer's feel. The quantization and swing characteristics also play a part here.

    What gear is everybody rocking?

Made some additions to the setup since the last time I posted: I fried the shit out of my Mackie CR3 tweeters doing something stupid, so I ended up copping a pair of Presonus Eris 3.5's, then about a month later I added the Presonus Sub 8. Got a Roland SP404A, then found a conductor's stand at...
