I think that, in a few years, hiphop will be something else... a couple of years ago, samples were mostly Jazz and stuff. Sound Creation
It depends what exeperience you have with sounds and programs... I personnaly use fruity and there are some plugins and extras you can "make" synthetic sounds with. But then, you could always rip sounds from other beats (vinyls or CDs...) like a good bass or a good kick... and then you can tweek... -

One of my friends used to say: "if you want to learn how to flow, take a beat and try to count with style(1,2,3,4,5.....). That way, you'll put the emphasis on your flow and not on what you're saying... after that, when you think your shit is tight, you can try with lyrics.... if you can't... -

Well, to me, you really have to look at it both ways. You could say it's all about the MC, but if the beat dont fit the MC or the MC is tight, but he's not feeling the beat, it wont sound quite right. I think both have to be well coordinated and then, the beat OR the lyrics can be simple and... -

Well, I do think it's usefull, specially if you use sample. I heard too many producers using samples and messing them all up. Of course, if you have a natural musical ear, that would also do the trick, but knowing your keys helps you in the long run to reinvent yourself and not be confined to... -
