I think orchestras are more often than not recorded with 2 to 4 mics, like Decca Tree technique or some similar technique... It makes lots of tracks when people like us want to simulate an orchestra and patch all these instruments in a daw. The way the musicians are placed in the room and the... -

Well. My initial question was about "instruments", or better say "sources" of sound... Because yes, then the mixing process makes things hard to count depending on the method used. Also, the question was "apart from drums and basses". -

Beat This! - June 17-18, 2020
I'm ready. I watched the 4th on the weekend cause I hadn't. Disappointing. And the first one yesterday. Now I'll watch the elections one, cause it's my favorite I think. I was surprised the 1st movie takes place in 2022. I thought it was way more in the future... It feels pretty close now.- YannFer

I have watched his Masterclass from the Masterclass website. I remember things being kept pretty simple. But he and the 2 co-producers Angel and Fede that he works with, they bounce stuff along the way, so they get an instrumental loop and Timbo mostly applies his drums to. That loop is made up... -

Yes, busses are a must. I try to have only one reverb for my whole mix. Applying time-based fx like compression , delay and reverb on busses saves lot of cpu and makes everything sound together and tight. -

Well yes, I'm asking about hip-hop beats. No vocals, either. Just the beat itself... So 20+ is ok. I did not expect that. But I'm feeling much better now. :D -

Ok... I did the "wife test" again... So I got rid of anything that sounded "right" in my beat and left only the "twisted" parts... So, after a minute or so, my beat changes to something else, and she goes "oh, that's cute!"... ... Well now, I'm pretty sure, she's the crazy one, here. Ain't...- YannFer

Hmmm... I don't do this much. I would stick the filter on the main lead track and activate it with some automation... Oh yes, I looove automation. Saved me from having hundreds of tracks. It's one of my biggest breakthrough in my beatmaking learning... But yes, most tracks are only playing for... -

As I was reading your answer, I was already thinking about a complex multi-layer 3 OSC +Noise arpeggiated synth for one of the 2 instruments... :rolleyes: I'm beyond redemption... No but seriously, I will try that. ... 3 spots for drums... Huh. -

It's funny, I would have said the opposite with boombap having more tracks than trap... But you're probably right, trap has lots of "ear candies"... I'm a sucker for ear candies.. -

Ok, I have a tendency to overload my beats with (sometimes waaayyy) too many things in them... So my question is, typically how many instruments apart from drums and bass do you have in your beats ? I am presently cooking a 20+ tracks beats, not counting about a dozen drums and 2 basses. (8... -
Resources for the drums pattern variety
I agree with Iron Keys, copying other beats can't result in great beats. But yes, it's a good way to learn the craft ! I would recommend listening to songs you like and try and replicate these patterns. It's not a shortcut, of course but it will train your ears. And that is VERY important...
