Still regarding sampling

It seems to be a common opinion that taking 4 bars from a record as they are, looping them, adding drums and other samples and instruments on top is something that producers should avoid. To win a battle on Illmuzic? Okay, fair enough. Should they never do it? Well, hold on a moment. I could give a billion examples; let’s take this one, and forgive me if it’s not hip hop, but it still applies to my reasoning. Bonobo sampled 4 bars from 'Aquarius' by Chaquito for his track 'Flutter,' and that’s exactly what we’re talking about. He built a whole song on that loop. Drums and other instruments were added, but the loop is central, not just accessory. If Bonobo had thought he shouldn’t do it, we would never have had this wonderful track. No one stopped Bonobo from producing tracks by giving up this approach, but if he had refused on principle, this music would have lost out. So I think a producer should prioritize music over technical issues. Virtuosity and skills are great when they serve the music, but it’s always the music that must lead, and music is not a tool for the ego of the creator. Good musicians, those who play real instruments, are not the ones who can play scales at monstrous speeds and impossible chords, if they don’t know when it’s time for simplicity and linearity or even to not play at all, without falling into the Malmsteen syndrome. My two cents.

Ngl, after years of self teaching myself hip hop, making catchy melodies etc inspired by my fave producers... to realising majority of their hit records were literally just fucking samples, was a really demotivating moment.

Felt betrayed.

I accepted early hip hop and how it was founded was like that. And I accept it to an extent with the sample style of hip hop.

But yeah. It's whatever. Make great records.

I kinda still also feel that should apply to battles too, but can't help feeling like it's slyly 'cheating' (at loss of a better term). Most annoys me when I see some of the better names here do it - because they don't have to, at all.

It feels like, you made a beat in 10 minutes by just chucking drums over a finished record. Can't justify 20-30 points for that surely.

It's one thing some average Joe doing it, and it still sounding a bit rough... bit if a Iron Keys, 2Good, Arvin, Twu, do it. And mix it really well (which would also take no effort for such names) it just feels mad cheap. For a battle. I dunno.

Is what it is, I think its if people don't recognise the sample but.

Whatever. We can all just upload our favorite records with new drums

Sampling a loop is fine, but I've always said that you should at least do something with it. It could be just chopping it up and rearranging it, or layering other stuff on top, whatever sounds dope. But like @Iron Keys said, it sucks to find out that some of the most famous Rap songs are just loops. :)

I agree to an extent, sometimes I feel really dirty. Like with the Kill Till I Die one, I had to stem rip it to make sure I could make it more my own and not just chop and rearrange the sample and just adding some drums and some bass. Done a couple others I feel bad about too.

I would like to just compose a load of stuff so I can get into sync licensing, but I get a lot of inspiration from a great sample, and get stuck in sampling mode. A dope sample is a dope sample at the end of the day. Half of sampling is an ear for a good sample, the other half is building around it to make it your own and dope for hip hop or whatever other genre you are sampling for. Just have to worry about the copyright police.

Agree with all this.

One reason I didn't spend too much time getting I to sampling.

Tho my mentor recently said meh someone will clear the sample or writing to the owner. Apparently sometimes it's really fucking easy.

to me it makes sense that battles need a different criteria. But as a simple listener, I mean, my library Is full of 4 bars sample based tracks that I'm grateful for.

All I know, is my shazam has some absolute bangers I'm going to sample and fuck someone with.

And I hope its @2GooD Productions who gets absolutely fucked and ruined by those beats I intend to make.

To make up for the recent warzone one, which, also came from my shazam list.
That's the spirit

I see. I guess we are talking about weak songs. What I mean Is that there's not much more than a voice and a little of guitar over Isaac Hayes sample in Glory Box by Portishead. Still It Is a powerful masterpiece.
