It's pitched as a musical instrument- since he's wearing it although that's the Lap Version. You're able to Jam live and basically be the drummer. The big deal is the pads themselves. The responsiveness is insane. They feel like hockey pucks and just the slightest touch triggers them so all kinds of ghost notes and other 'dragging the fingers' techniques pay off well.

I have it slapped on top a snare stand or sometimes play tabletop..
Sometimes I just use it to trgger additional notes behind a simple/shell drum pattern.

It doesn't have any helper features like note repeat or any sort of quantizing system. It's a straight live MIDI input devce.

Funny story - I saw this at AES last year, the dude was away from his station, I picked it up and started playing with it, when dude got back he was all pissed off and possessive about someone touching his baby, he gave me seroius attitude.
It's a musical instrument for chrissake, and it's a trade show to demonstrate what they do. Thought it was kind of silly to get all worked up that someone was demoing their tool.

On a similar note, this thread is smelling like Spam to me.

Um...no...probably John Emrich the drummer who does all their live demonstations.
Same guy in the video above.

I didn't own one at the AES. The AES is what inspired me to get one though.

I see. Well, I got a lot more toys to talk about!

Funny how you use the Beatles joint for Contemplating War. Last week I video googled Sgt Peppers Animation and was able to watch the whole movie. That joint was part of the soundtrack.

There are some nice raw multitracks of various Beatles work on the internet, I was able to do that Eleanor Rigby / Contemplating War joint from a "strings only" version.

I think the movie you're talking about is Yellow Submarine, classic film.

Regarding the music making and the gear, that's what we're all here for, apologies if I came off harsh earlier in my post. What kind of work are you doing, are you a full time producer or hobbyist?

I'm a media editor for Producer's Edge Magazine. It's a quarterly print magazine about Hip Hop, R&B and Rap music production. My column is called the Griffin Avid's corner. Last issue it was about drum variations using multi-trackers (creativity with wave layering) and my coming article is about making drum sounds from scratch using Adobe Audition 3- although it applies to any wave editor.

I mostly work on the video/samples/software/sounds for the bundled DVD-ROM and youtube channel.
I also have a commecial site with goodies for sound design coming soon.

That and I'm the resident forum hound.
Long as they don't support cracks and the threads are interesting- I'm there.
