I started rhymin because the radio here used to NEVER play hiphop..
I still havent forgiven them for it lol...NOw they sold they soul to clear channel BUT
because I couldnt get enough of it I strated at first just memorising songs like roxanne roxanne or la di da di and just write down the lyrics all day..Then someone said why dont you just write your own lyrics? BaDaBing!! Started writing then battling cats that lead to recording and that led to trying to make the "sound" so long story real short here I am..lol
I gotta tell you in the early days hiphop wasnt exactly excepted in the southeast , and I still hold some grudges against mfr's back then who made life hard just because I wanted to wear pumas and shit....(yes it was that racist and bad).
Now that it is THE music I think Im pissed in a different fashion..but Im rambling and dating myself..lol..1

I wouldn't say I rap actually. I do it sometimes and I know how to do it, but it is for fun really. (in finnish of course)

What do you think about this: Many of us producers really know how to rap. Many of y'all (I really wouldn't count myself in) do it better than lot of rappers, BUT to be a great producer/MC is a real challenge. Like Rsonist and Dre (from cool & dre), Hi-Tek etc. do OK songs, but they're just OK. No classics really... Many producers seem to lack the ambition (or something) to be a great MC. Is there also disadvantages to be an producer also?

I feel ya. Its like you gonna fall short somewhere. Just about every Producer/Emcee is weak in some catagory. I know for a fact that my lyricism will be in question if i took up emceein' again. lol But im cool with that, cuz overall i just wanna make hot songs.

I think there is alotta disadvantages to bein' a rapper too. Cuz first off, you gonna wanna keep all the good beats for your project. There is only 24 hours in the day, so either your beats or your rhymes will evolve slower than usual. And its overall draining to your creative juices.

Here is anotha scenario, what if you decided to rap alil' bit, and u dropped a EP. And the response to it just got ridiculous! And your emcee persona damn near completey eclipses
your producer persona publicly. And otha producers are courting you to rap on they beats, and do features on shit you didnt produce. How would you take that? Would you still stress tha fact that you been producing for like a decade and u ill wit, or would you take emceein' to the forefront cuz thats what the people are feeling and overall respect you as......?

i do it all. i wish i couldave just been an emcee, building up the skills to produce and all the equipment has been quite damaging to my financial situation for the past decade. i couldave already had a house benz wifey and 2.5 children, "but no" i had to build a studio. my krew seems to have faith in me and all say it will pay off in the end. i know so as well cuz if i didnt believe in myself i wouldave never put so much into everything. seems like nowadays more emcee's have the ability to do both and vise versa. this is a very positive thing for hip-hop, emcee's that produce as well have a more creative control on how they want things done, rather than just taking whats giving to them.

When you produce you are spending a lot of time with the beat and you see it differently than rappers that just spit over it after a quick listen. The producer feels the beat out better and knows what should go where. A perfect example of this is Dr Dre or Neptunes tracks. Not only do they make the beats for their artists, they guide them through it and actually tell them things they need to do to capture their vision correctly and the result is countless classics.

for a long time, it wasnt a lot of people who wanted to become producers before they ever rapped... mostly because old school producers were only famous to rappers and other producers. so if you were just a rap fan and had never really tried to get into rapping yourself, you didny know a lot of producers. thats a lot different now though, its a lot of real real famous producers.

yo i started to write shit again lately and its a good switchup if u not creative on da beatz.the more iam writing the more i didnt care on details on a beat if iam generaly feelin it even if its a fuckin loop (that i made lol) its really enough to bring it on if u know what i mean.from a writers view but then once the producer view comes back again (while iam recording do last tweaks on beats and mix etc.) then i really can finish and add what i want to make it more exciting (CANDY!). moral of da story? judging an unfinshed beat (without lyrics) is BULLSHIT and means SHIT!.

uhhhm yeah i produce and rap (if i really have to say sumtin important that must come out of me NO BLING BLING OR DISS BULLSHIT!) yeah then i record some rap.otherwise i just make beatz when i found hot samples or have a nice idea for a track.if not then i just watch PORN allday everyday haha! J/K!

Kanye West. I mean no one can really argue much about his flow or his production. Some producers can't so both but to be quite honest, producers have an edge because they can feel the layout of their tracks and formulate ideas for artists while creating their tracks generally. Tell me if you agree...

I do both. On some tracks I produce, they are designed for someone else to spit on. On other tracks, my heart and soul is connected to them and no one can do it justice they way I can because what i'm hearing in my head.

I do both but if I had to choose I'd stick to producing. I don't even post up my raps up. I don't think you should make it avaliable to the public unless you know its hot. Until then keep it in the vault and build from there.

That's what I start out doing. I mean, it was common to kick beats on the kitchen table and rap with your friends or cousins. So, we, members of the Hip Hop nation, usually started out doing both. We ALL have tried to "kick a beat" or rap at one point. I mean, honestly, this generation may be different, maybe ya'll don't do that. However, for the older ones here, I am pretty sure everyone will say they tried to rap and create beats at one point during their life. Whether that was rapping into a boombox with record as an instrumental played or creating beats using a drum machine and turntable. This is circa 80s and early/mid-90s.
