from what i've heard, its called a neutral accent. i guess its just how they were taught in some cases, and for those who taught themselves, its basically following whats around. i know theres a couple in australia who have an aussie accent when singing, im not really a huge fan of them in any way, but one example is a girl named missy higgins if u wanna have a listen

Most of them are taught to sing without an accent. Look at Celine Dion, when she started singing in English, she didn't even know what the hell she was singing, but she had a accent teacher some like that

Most singers use that generic accent. There are a few that sing in their real accents but they're mostly punk, ska and folk acts like; Madness, Billy Bragg, Sham 69, Sex Pistols etc

The lead singer of Texas talks with a real strong Glaswegian accent but you'd never know from how she sings.

america is just too big of an influence. a high percentage of the music on the radios in non-american countries is american. floetry is nice but i just cant imagine how they would sound singing with a british accent lol. really though, i want to see more rnb singers from the uk sing with their british accents, that would be something fresh! at least with rappin, alot of mc's here keep their accent.
