Radio is just as corrupt as the music industry........I know for a fact the Def Jam has their hands in hot97 here in new york and others pay big money to get their artist spins

It all depends on where you live at. If you live in the Bay Area you will never get radio play if your local or independent. There on some hollywood shit. Everything is payola, but in other places like down south its a little easier. I've been to New York they play mostly New York shit, I've been to L.A. they play mostly L.A. shit, and the same with Atlanta, and mostly all down south states. BUt come out to the Bay Area, no way will they play any Bay Area Hip Hop. The DJ's have no say so and never will. If a DJ plays anything that he personally likes and is not on the Program Directors list he's fired.

i'm from d.c. and they used to have like an hour on thursdays when they would play local artists on one station but i don't think they still do it,i heard it for like a month or two and then it just kinda stopped.......i think they are definately tryin to attract bigger names to back their radio station by playin the same 10 most popular songs over and over

yo MadScientist.. dont yall got that thing called the Bay Area Hip Hop Coalition or something? Last I checked they pretty much run the Bay Area music scene, dictating what gets played and what doesn't. Seems to me that with backing like that it should be easier for locals to get air play. But from what u say, I could be wrong.

Hmmm. I remember reading about it somewhere. Look in to it. Maybe its not there now, but it used to be. Guess it wasnt a very strong coalition then, huh? :p

look the reason radio wont play local artist is just a fact its a business that plays music for free and the only way to get money is from adds that get played in between the songs.....so in order for them to make money they need to play the music that will get the people to listen if more people listen and depending on there age and ethnic back ground that will help them get companys to pay them to play there ad. Most unknown artist will just have to live with getting play at 12 am......

i think it all has to do with rotation on commercial radio stations. they have to play whats "in" at the moment for all the marketing purposes and shit like that. i don't really know much about it but they are only supposed to play certain songs in certain time-frames. after that time frame they can play whatever and i think in mixshows and other stuff they can play whatever. i think that ad stuff that fame mentioned has something to do with it too.
local ppl around here just try to do the intros for the radio dj's mixshows and stuff like that or they get their tracks played late at nihgt and of course theres always college radio.......

one company... CLEAR CHANNEL COMMUNICATIONS
if you do the knowledge, you will see that they control over 1,200 US radio stations, of every main genre out there
Pay-for-play...think about it. A "song" in rotation is no longer a song on the spin list but actually a 3 to 3 1/2 min. "commercial" that's paid for in CDs, multiple CDs at that. FYI: one CD=$100 (at least 8 months ago, could be more now cause things always fluctuate in this biz). It's quite sad but what can you do. And their greedy hands are not just on radio. Peep it.
