Seriously though, I really wish dudes would spend as much time or more doing something about it rather than complaining about it!
I see dudes blasting damn near every beat and lyric they hear these days. "This ain't that and that ain't this". Either you want your shit to be mainstream or you don't! If some one thinks underground music is the best what's the real complaint? It wouldn't be underground if it was played on the radio 24/7 now would it? It would be mainstream......
Time goes forward. The next "99" will be 2099 and I very seriously doubt any of us will be around to see it! Everything thing we did back then and do now will be laughed at by the youngsters when they're catching space shuttles to go to a concert on Mars!
If you haven't heard a classic "make one"! Now if you drop what you think is a "classic" and no one else thinks it is then what? You're right and everyone else is wrong?
We really gotta get over this b.s and just make music. Stop trying to put everything in boxes and then throw a good or bad label on it. Nobody will ever think a like and nobody will every feel the same about music. Music is suppose to be fun....a break from "real life shit" that you can't escape. Why are we making it so complicated and drawing lines in the sand? Most these arguments are just old and played out imo. Some how we have to find away to get past this shit...REALLY!
Nobody holds a gun to anyone's head and forces them to listen to the radio. If u listen to it it's because u want to. Bump a cd or your mp3 player 24/7. Go to to clubs that play what u want to hear...they do exist.

There has always been "shitty" hip-hop...it didn't start recently...
In the 90's there was dumb ass songs......quick example 3rd Bass "Pop goes the weasel".....bunch of dudes tryin to diss Vanilla Ice cause of a "gimmick".
Only difference today is the "shitty" hip-hop is what's making the money.
People are beginning to not care about "selling out", because the people who talk shit about them aren't paying their bills.
Perfect example (not hip-hop related) Robert Plant of Led Zepplin shared a grammy for album and record of the year last night for "Raising Sand"...a bluegrass type album.
He said straight up that back in the day he would be "selling out". Now after Led Zepplin has seen it's glory days come and gone...he's picking up album of the year grammys.
Now what's wrong with that?
People would say "keep it real". Nothing wrong with that....If you don't like the game...you must change it from the inside....
Tired of this crap about hip-hop being real or fake...... You either do this to try to make money or do it for yourself.....
You try to make money? THEN you do what you need to do to make that money...whether it's "real" or "fake" Chances are what people consider "real hip-hop" won't make you any mansion money....

1st off... i'd like to say... THAT'S a VERY POOR EXAMPLE.
thats song had a meaning behind it... it was different... and that was Hip Hop... i do understand (sort of) ur point though, and that's what kills EVRYTHING, no matter if ur makin music, or makin hubcaps... the people behind the scenes are million, and billionaires... they know for a fact that most of us tryin to get put on never seen a measly 50-100 grand b4 all at one time sittin in our bank accounts, and thats how we get caught up... the money has overtaken the love and the fame that u once sought for bcuz we all have a family to feed... there is not a unity in this... we are all individuals that are tryin to get paid and give our individual families a better place to live... thats when "intelligent" Hip Hop takes the hit, bcuz its much easier to write a song about fukkin and shootin, politics or just making money, than it is to write about my skateboard, my little red corvette, or just about bein yourself on the mic... alot of the new rappers arent "Emcees" at all... they are hustlas that just happen to know how to rap (jim jones is a perfect example)... listen to some accapellas and u'll see what im talkin bout... hot music can mask wack lyrics almost everytime.

That's automatically assuming that if you make music to make money that you don't love nor take serious what you do. I can't agree with that at all. I would like to earn a living doing what I love and that's make music. There would be no better job on the planet for me. Not speaking on the topic that some would like me to as an Emcee nor raping soul music artist for samples does not mean I don't really love this game. Like Sucio said...some of us are definitely becoming our parents...some even there grand parents...lol

Pop music has never really been good music, pop music is just going through its southern club style hiphop mixed with vocoder rnb phase. Its just a phase, a current trend that will soon enough move on as quickly as it came.
Just like the phase when east coast/west coast hiphop became the pop forte, the artists made a lot of money culminating in 50 cent. It started to die from there(in a pop sense) Ultimately to be replaced by the current trend, unintelligent dance music.
What a lot of older heads would call real hiphop(golden era) still exists, but its no longer the fashionable trend.
It doesnt get pushed anymore, now that its return on investment has diminished theres no money in it anymore.
The industry as a whole is imploding a little, and thats when the cracks in the system start to show, to the point that some people can see whats plain to see and dont like it, while others are happy to jump on the current bandwagon for the sake of a few bucks and become invested in it.
All the best to those that choose to jump on a bandwagon and stop innovating and becoming a clone of someone else, thats their right to choose that path, as it is also the right of those that dislike the current trend to dislike it, it is also alright for everone whatever their opinion to express it regarding the subject, for we do live in a somewhat free world, with somewhat freedom of speech. We should ALL exercise that right heartily, thats what creates good discussions and discussions allow for people to understand each others view points, whether they ever agree or not.

I guarantee that I'm a lot older than most ILL members, minus maybe Relic, so I lived the golden era of hip hop. Here's why I feel that there's no way in hell it's ever coming back. Most of the attitudes expressed here is why! A total disconnect and day to day trashing of what's in now. Nobody who makes "today's hip hop" has a negative thing to say about that era. I personally have never heard the kids today speak ill of the hip hops past...not once, but everything they drop gets shitted on in some way or another by the older hip hop gen. This is exactly the same type disconnect young African Americans have with older civil rights era African Americans. Everybody wants to hold on to the past and not pass the torch to the future.
Keep hoping and praying for this "southern style" hip hop to pass. People go to the club to dance...that's never going to change so "southern style hip hop" is here to stay. It's been on top for how long now? 8 or more years. The golden era only had a 8 or so year life span and it faded! Hell, they said hip hop in itself "was a fad" in the beginning until it basically took over the world. Oh...the next phase is coming but no one knows what it is and chances are most doing it today won't like it either...lmao

2Good has got a point, everything on radio right now and even back then was just the 'fad" at the time. The "golden era" Hip-Hop was just as much a fad as the Crunk music that plays today. People can get mad all they want about what is hot at the moment, but that is a waste of time. It is all up to the "Listener" who in turn spends money on the music. It is labeled POP for a reason, which is short for POPULAR.
I think we sometimes give the industry to much credit for what is out there. It's like people blaming the devil for everything that is bad....when in reality it is people as a whole that are the cause. Sure the industry has some influence, but in the end if the people wanted to hear something different the sales would show.
So in the end keep doing you, and eventually someone will notice and it will catch on as long as you are persistent, and really grinding.

Dont think the current incarnation of southern style hiphop is here to stay for a minute, nothing is forever.
It will have its die hard followers, just like sampled tracks from the past, its the time they associate with, its human nature. We all have our cliques, our peer groups to impress.
And we forever seek acceptance and the badge of respect from our peers.
Different things impress different peer groups, old school hiphop impressed me because it was innovative and challenged boundaries, it gave a voice to the oppressed, and sought to enlighten the world as to the state of affairs of black america through story telling, word play, straight up facts.
It was always evolving, getting better and better, the art matured.
All the time becoming more of a behemoth of income generation.
Eventually it became so good it came to dominate the western world as POP music.
At this point the quality of the music started to fall off as it wasnt about the music anymore, it was about the established brands and revenue streams.
Lil Jon, Missy, Timbaland got very popular at a pivotal point in hiphop history and so hiphop took the southern route. When the same industry has milked southern hiphop for all its worth it will be abandoned by the corporate labels just like oldschool.
Who knows the next big thing will probably be rock music again, there is no originality left so it would surprise me if that was reincarnated. And where would hiphop be then? Left in the unprofitable wayside like everything else.
But then there is commercial music that whole existence is just to sell mass copies regardless of quality.
Take eurodance music for example. Europop, its trash always has been always will be, but it sells, thats why its commercial.
it sells because it is POPULAR though. If it wasn't it wouldn't sell. The ones putting it out there have no control over people buying it, people buy it because they like it.
I know what you are saying, but I think there is a big difference from something that got popular on merit and quality, than something that is is put out simply to generate cash using tried and tested algorythms for success(ie: current bandwagon).
There are still artists that find success through talent, but they are the innovative ones, they have something that separates them from the rest.
Can we please stop talking about what is or isn't "good" music?!?!?

The "other" Relic: I'm placing an example using Robert Plant who is one of the greats in rock music. So let's convert that to some people we know a little more::::
For example...if Rakim did an album with Britney Spears..........AND he wins a grammy for best album.....would you think he regrets working with an artist who isn't even close to him in terms of skill?
You think Rakim would throw out his grammy award because he "sold out"? Who cares if the "real hip-hop" heads think it's "good" music? If he wins a grammy, why should it matter?
If you make $$ from your music.....and the "real hip-hop heads" think it's corny.......why should it matter?
Now if you're doing an album for your homeboys (which I see a lot), then do what you want....
At the end of the day.....if you want to make music your OCCUPATION...you have to live up to what the "boss" likes/wants you to produce...The boss is who writes your check....
I was one of those of yall who looked @ today's hip hop and frowned upon it...... I will not become anything like my parents......
I will not take hip-hop for granted.... I'm grateful that a virtually new culture has stuck around for this long...... Hip-hop is bigger than it's ever been...and it's getting bigger, even if people think the quality has gone down........
To be honest....nearly all genres of music have "gone down in quality"...for example....rock music has been reduced to playing simple guitar cords and shreds...less skill is needed......
People need to start stepping out of the box a little bit......there's a lot more to this world than what's in YOUR box.....and if you are not willing to step out of the box....you can't call shit from looking out the window....
