Whats the thread title? "XP VS VISTA for production"

Key word, production.

If the benchmarks you are reading are not for production, then your post is completely irrelevant to this thread, so you my friend, are an idiot.
mmk.

i like how you phrased this theoretically, so as to maintain some integrity for your posting however...

so you my friend, are an idiot.
.. you veer off into assholery right here. Take a look at your avatar, and tell me who the real idiot is.

Don't get pissed at me because you realize now that you wasted money on getting 8gb of ram, a mobo to support all that and a 64 bit OS... pissant.

My personal opinion...Vista does what it does, but i wouldn't use it for production because all my software hasn't been ported yet. 8gb is not overkill, especially when using the kore2/komplete5 bundle. Kontact 3 will swallow 4gb pretty quickly when you begin layering sounds.

If I was primarily using software i wouldn't use Vista until all my software was available in 64bit versions and I could get atleast 16-32gb of ram to use. 64bit Vista Home Basic is limited to 8gb ram, Home Premium to 16gb, and Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate will get you to 128gb. My rhetorical question is how long will it be before 128gb is not enough?

I don't see an advantage in moving from 32bit WinXP to 32bit Vista at all.

Now since i am primarily hardware based, I can get away with using Vista as i only have to deal with the midi and the audio, no VSTi's, so to speak.

I personally would hold out as Windows 7 is coming, but dont fall for the Vista is crap comments that people are saying...if your software has 64bit versions AND your hardware, audio card, monitors, etc, have 64bit drivers then I think vista is worth checking out.

A good read for XP vs Vista for production is http://www.dawbench.com/

beef.

thanks for the info dream police. i was just looking this stuff up for a couple days and decided to post it up. but ya. i guess it wont make too much of a diff?

so xp is a 32 bit.
but xp pro is 64 bit right? that means 8+gb? but online ppl say its still limited to 4 gb.

"2GB dedicated for kernel usage, and 2GB left for application usage. Each application gets its own 2GB, but all applications have to share the same 2GB kernel space"

so each app gets 2 gb, meaning u can take advantage of 8 gb?
2gb kernel space + 2gb for reason + 2gb for sound forge + 2gb for gaming.

and virtual memory works the same as physical memory? physical memorys faster? my computer says 3gb under 'System', i'm assuming it's using 1gb for virtual? if physical is faster, how do i assign 4gb to physical.???????

I NEED INFO

"but xp pro is 64 bit right?"

No XP Pro is 32bit, the main difference from XP home is that XP pro supports multiple processors. So it still has the 4gb limit. There is a 64bit version of XP called Windows XP 64bit (great name) But it very unsupported and I would not use it at this point.

"my computer says 3gb under 'System', i'm assuming it's using 1gb for virtual? if physical is faster"

No that means you have 3gb of physical ram install in the machine. I would not worry about virtual ram very much. I does a bit of a different job (or the same job in a different way) Physical ram of course is much faster and what to worry about. Virtual memory is actually part of your hard drive used for memory operations so it does not take away from physically installed memory. Clear as mud?
