Referencing Songs
If you are referring to being a writer only you definitely need a singer, but its lucrative in all genres to write, I was watching a segment on tv the other day that had these Country writers and they were getting paid bigtime, a couple of these people look like they were like 50 years old and getting paid off of the stuff that you hear Tim Mcgraw doing, I know a producer that has 3 singers and he uses them to reference songs for him if he his trying to produce an RnB song geared to a particular known artist, one of them wrote some songs for Destiny's child, but the best of all worlds is if you could produce, sing and write, but you find a lot of writers today that can sing good enough to put their own material out, but if you can get a really good singer, either produce your own RnB or get someone that is good producing RnB songs....NOt beats but good structured songs......use them to present and reference your writing skills, build a good catalog and present them to some A&R's.
