when money is the goal, i do not believe it is possible to release an album like Illmatic. it takes away the focus of the artist, so that even if the album is good, the heart and soul that would have been there isnt there the way it would have been. you cant say, "this one is for the radio, this one was made for the clubs, this here is for the streets, plus i got one just for the ladies...."- which is what almost always happens these days. even Talib has began doing this. (he did "waitin for the dj" with the intent of it catching on and becoming a catch phrase!) so....... that being said, the focus just isnt there. hopefully it wil cycle!
as far as the deep, dark, underground..... dont count on it. these guys are usually of the "i'm sick like cancer" variety; one liners as far as the eye can see. as far as gangstar... guru has been average at best as an mc, and he (along with most of the underground) seems to be obsessed with the "bling-bling" guys. the underground these days is just as shallow as the radio in my opinion. again, with gangstar. guru talks about how so man yartists arent true to the spirit of hip hop, and yet he has songs with snoop (give me a break) and jadakiss, who ironically was the element that made "right where you stand" an instant classic. (yes, i know it was also premier's track... cant get it out of my head!) ????? i think that hip hop as a whole is caught up in itself. if jay actually follows through with his so-called black album, and makes it with no single or video, then perhaps he may very well achieve that elusive TRUE classic (he hasnt had one yet, yes that includes reasonable doubt, but it was a great one.) because of the lack of distractions. but for a guy whose career has been built around the love of money and dissing women...... whose videos have been key, i doubt he will actually follow through with it.
