WHY THE HELL does studio people put the speakers's volume THAT HIGH??

That's really a stupid thread, but it's fuckin true. Everytime I went to a studio, the guy that plays the shit puts the music SOOOO LOOUD. I just don't even know what's the point, it's so loud that your ears hurt and that he has to put it down for you to talk. It just annoys me. I know some will tell me that they do it to hear the beat fuller but still it's TOO LOUD!

Anyone ever experience that too??

Get used to it! lol, nah, I know what u mean, I used to be that way with my car stereo (playing it at full blast with 2 12" Alpines, 1500 watts)! Now, I can't stand them things.... My head used to throb from the bass, low frequencies are actaully the worst for your ears too...

I play beats loud because i gotta feel em..... its like u wanna take a Sip your Oj or ur drink or do u wanna drink the damn thing

actuallly, if anything, you should listen to your mix t a lower than normal volume...your ears have built-in compressors almost that start to change the sound at high volumes. the guy probly just thinks its cool to listen to loud music...

Yeah that's what I always thought, that when it's lower you can hear all the imperfection. I'm glad to see i'm not the only one who noticed this.

Yeah, but here goes another thing, at what volume do you make your beats? it makes a difference in getting the beat to sound exactly the same and also to feel the beat......some people are handicapped if they really cant turn up the volume on their monitors when they produce, it really does matter..........now as far as playing the beat loud at a studio they do this to test the mix, especially on hip hop, frequency response, low end etc......the studio I just started working at has 18 inch Tannoy monitors and subs they do it to see if the track knocks they do pro mixes there too.

Little off topic but I hate when recording vocals and I'm hearing my voice from headphones "too loud". My friends are always wondering how can I record my vocals when I barely hear my own voice (and beat)from the phones...

the fact is, a mix should be tested at various volume levels. our ears have the flattest reponse with a level of around 80dB though so this is the volume that should be used to monitor at for most of the time when mixing. sometimes though, the volume is turned right down in order to see how the vocals (and other things) are sitting in the mix. if you turn your monitors all the way down so you cant hear anything and then turn them upever so slightly, the lead vocals (or lead instrument if there are no vocals) should be the first thing you can hear. it slaways a good idea to check that all sounds in the mix can still be heard at very low volume.

keep in mind that as volume increases, so does the LF response of your ears. so you have to turn your shit up reasonably loud if you want a good indication of how your bass is sitting in the mix.

another thing you have to watch out for is temporary threshold shift. if you listen to music at 80dB for too long (e.g. 2 hours or more) your ears will tire and will not respond as well as they should to high frequencies. the mix on a whole will sound duller. its best to take a rest (say 15 mins or so) every couple of hours when mixing so your ears can stay fresh and produce the flattest response to your monitors as possible.
