just gotta do what feels right to you IMO. When you start tryna fit to certain method i think you constrain ya self. My Philosophy: find a dope sample or song, loop up some bars, chop those up(on the kiks and snares as said before or where they would fall),rearrange those into a couple different 2 or 4 bar loops for a main section/hook section/breakdown/intro outro as for whatever you see fit. Thats the easy part to me. Its all the other stuff that goes along wit makin a beat that can be make it or break it.

I just look for cool sounds now. Hitz, a lil effect here, a drum roll there... Mixing different samples from different songs. I've started composing a lot recently but usually sprinkle a few sampled hitz in to still keep that feel. Also, I use sampled chord progressions or sorta backing to fill out a song then just play my own melody on top with an instrument that blends nicely. My style has changed recently tho and I hardly ever just flip a sample anymore. I'm sure I'll get back to it soon enough just had to try something different for a bit.

I DJ and do a lot of juggling and mixing tracks, so that's influenced my approach. A lot of my tracks have resulted from me mixing up on the decks and liking the combinations I hear.

I'm trying to shrink the size of the samples I use. I can use pretty long ones sometimes. But it's all good to me, I'm happy to hear a track with a startlingly obvious sample, if it sounds good or is a groove.

I started out djing back in 1983 so, I love sampling and everthing about it. I think the best Hip Hop music was made in the 90s but.....that is just my opinion. But as far as a philosophy on sampling, I really don't have any. I try not to sample too much synthy sounding stuff but that's just me. I'm kinda like Showbiz in that I like the sounds of the late 60s and 70s. Nothing sounds like that now and to flip those sounds with thick drums and low end bass is like beauty to my ears.

One of my main problems (at home) is a lack of gear, if any of you checked out my post on the Christmas Wish List thread you will notice that I've been focusing on buying new gear and getting the tools I need to do what Im trying to accomplish. As of today, I haven't taken the MV-8800 out the box yet and I ordered a Trigger Finger that Fed Ex hasn't delivered yet. I know that both of these will help my production tremendously.

Anyway, I'm curious to know if you guys have a rule of thumb when chopping your samples for a beat. IM NOT LOOKING FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON SAMPLING! I know how to sample and chop but my personal philosiphy needs improvement in my opinion. So how do you all go about breaking down a sample and flipping it in general?

MOF

I am also very green when it comes to using samples so everytime I use them it's slightly different. On this current project I am using a sample with a trumpet. I cut it up on either 2 or 4 bars (depending on the specific horn sample) like Blunt mentioned and then took it to the sequencer to match up with the drums. As long as I can get the drums to match this one loop then I am set. If it didn't match then I could have judged in which direction to timestretch and then tried it again. I think this step is the most time consuming, frustrating, and least fun.

The whole song is based around this begining loop so I have many different versions of this melody that I can chop up in the same way as this begining loop; so this loop is a blueprint. This is actually the first time that I have did it like this and it's mainly because im not all lit (no pun intended MOF:) and can concentrate and read the illforums as im working it and use this song to get better familiar with the equalizer and the sequencer.

So from now on i'll try to use the begining loops as a blueprint for the other melodies of the song. But honestly i'm going to try to identify the actual notes to recreate the melody with multiple instruments or maybe using the sample and using the notes for an ill bassline. Hope this helps, sampling has plagued me for years!!!! but mainly just cause i was d&h and didn't do my homework.. gettin drunk an high fallin outta my head... whew it's so much better now

hope this helps, have a nice day decalion
