Ive been listening in the Showcase more recently and ive noticed that some beats sound real repetitive. And you think its annoying or whatever. Then you hear somebody elses beat, that switches up more, and you go: damn, this is hot.
What im sayin is, those beats that sound repetitive arent real good until you picture an MC spittin over them. And some of the more complex beats dont sound right with an MC spittin on them.

My question is:
When you make your beats, do you set them up with an MC in mind, and you say "An MC is gonna sound good on this". Or do you make beats keeping the more live technique (switchin it up) in mind?

Next time you listen in the showcase youll notice the shit i said about "repetitive beats" and "complex beats". And at first i thought they were just bad beats, but then i listen and i was thinkin "I bet this person was thinkin about how itll sound after the rapper spits".

yet another "simple vs complex" sub-topic. until you hear a finished product you cant possibly know if the mc will work on it or not.

as far as the original question, which was interesting until i saw its premise, (no offense.. but this horse has been dead for a while now...)

i make songs to be written to. i setup the song and its structure and write to that. thats my method. my beats arent jsut loops. but thats jsut me, and its just fine if someone wants to do that because, ONCE AGAIN, if the final product is dope than thats all that counts. why is that so hard to get?

Yea I rap and make my own beats so naturally I kind of set it up for me in my mind. But at that same time I try to make the beat capturing enough to where you would want to listen to what I'm saying.....lol and then on another note I just dont give a damn. I think you should do your best on any production, can't hold back music. In my opinion a category/style is a limitation. Don't think about what you're making, just make it. Music is similar to capturing an emotion and transferring it 2 music form. You can't capture that same exact feeling ever again so use it all up.

I feel what u saying. I usually make beats without the MC in mind but still try to put in spots for choruses and smooth transitions. Still I cant rap on my own beats. I just cant. Yet I got some cats that flip the beat crazy and flow crazy in a way I never thought its possible to flow on that beat.

i never make loops. there is always atleast one change up and some progression.

my typical style is two have a verse and a chorus which are noticably different. this is the setup i use for making beats to suit MCs.

sometimes i make tracks where i start with one or two instruments and then bring in the rest gradually so they are all playing together in the last 16 bars.

it just depends. whatever suits the track.

but on the real, fuck a loop. go chase your tail if you want to make loops.

Phil,
Tell you the truth, i heard your beat, "The Prince" and i decided to make this thread. Because i thought at first, this beats pretty good. Its a little repetitive (but im the kind of person who likes repetitive beats). I like the drums. Its just good. And then i thought what its gonna sound like after there was an MC on it. And i was goin damn, this is gonna be a hot track. And i said, he was probly thinkin about an MC when he made this.

And Cold Truth,
Im not sure if you were serious or not when you said "..................... y..a..w....n....yet another "simple vs complex" sub-topic". Cuz i dont remember seein any posts like this before.
If theres a bunch of posts like this then its my bad.

I hope that was ironic ... if not you're really narrow-minded

how so? i was dead set.

to me, making a loop is like making a 5 (or so) second song and playing lots of times.

if thats not lazy and narrow minded then nothing is. it takes an extra hour or so to make some progression which makes the beat much more than one hour better.

once again.....fuck a loop. loops are unfinished beats IMO. thats not to say there is no such thing as a phat loop (DJ Premier made lots of phat loops.....which is why i think he is so overrated) but it is to say that a loop is a loop and a beat is a beat and they are two completely different things. one cant hold its own and the other one can.

thats what a lotta cats do - the whole song is 10 seconds looped over and over again. Even Kanye does that but u can hardly tell its loop cuz the loop is big and rich.

EVERYTHING GOES AS LONG AS IT IS DOPE! :D

why, OH WHY, do we need to have these arguments over and over again!?!!?!?!?

sometimes, it's all about a phat loop. sometimes, it's all about a complex, mind-blowing, arrangement. in the end, it's all about BALANCE...

i wasn't sarcastic. the arguement is old and dead. it does nothing but cause debate.

For reeelz, lets all decided that we can only argue about new topics...LOL I mean if people want to just argue about the same shit...do a search, find the thread and start it back up, we don't need a hundred threads about loops vs. progressive and sampling vs. keys and etc. vs. etc....
