Yes, it's true -- the U.S. has basically had subsidized gas prices for the length of the Cold War.

The fact is that getting to and from anywhere in L.A. is about 15 - 30 miles one way. American cities are really spread out, like L.A., Houston, etc. If I need to get anywhere in Los Angeles, it's at least a 15 - 30 mile drive one way. Cats in cities that are more compact, like NYC and Chicago - at least have a transit system, or don't have to drive so far to get to their destination.

For example, a cat living in Queens to get to work in Manhattan, it's about 15 miles.

For a cat living in San Bernardino to get to work in downtown L.A. it's about 75 miles. Same metro area. Try doing that every day going to work. Thousands of people DO THAT EXACT TREK.

That's like living in Southampton, UK and driving to work daily into central London EVERY DAY. The price adds up.

So you cats in Europe, you really don't have to drive long-ass distances to get to work, or you take the subway. Plus you have a great rail system (ICE, bullet trains) Have you seen the subway in LA? It's pathetic.
