I got the boss dr202 learned to program drums and bass on that got kinda good at the machine but the sounds were to hissy.

I read somewhere in an interview with pete rock where he was asked if u were teaching someone to produce what equipment would u start em out on to learn the ropes? and he replied something like a dr202.

lol, now i know im stepped in the right direction

my actual first piece was a dual deck tape recorder. hip hop oldheads know what i'm talking about. but my first real piece was an alesis sr-16 drum machine. i had to layer four drum kicks to get a decent kick, but it handled its business for a time.

my first piece was a mc-505. it served its purpose for learning how to program and play drums and melodies but you cant put anything new into it so i had to upgrade.

whats going on?

man y'all cats are spoiled. i was making beats with a karaoke stereo, and 2 sec dj sampler. and y'all had a mpc 2000xl. where is the paying of the dues? when i first starting making beats, there was no fruity loops, or any software you get for free. thats why i hate when i here wack stuff coming from cats with computers and mpc's. i made doper stuff with a tape deck.

alright.........i think i'm done now. sorry for the outburst;)

Werd my first piece was the alesis sr 16 too. Had it wheen I was 14 (22 now) I sold it tho a couple years ago to afriend cause I wasn't serious about doing beats at the time. In between that some where was mtv music generator and a tascam 414 4 track recorder . and a cheap mic. Oh and 2 technic 1100's(or was it 1400's [no I don't mean 1200's]) turntables bought of a friends dad. And a gemini scratch master mixer. All bout with my lil paycheck from my lil b.s. Jobs I had when I was young.

hey mercurywaters shut your pie hole, you know nothing of the individuals who bought thier equipment. I have a job and bought my mpc when it came out. You know nothing of paying dues if you think struggling with low end equipment qualifies you as paying your dues. I produce tracks for mc's i want to work with and make music. I charge them nothing , its all about getting the music out....talk about paying dues son! spreading hip hop without trying to make money from it. My music is known here in LA, sold in fat beats, stacks vinyl, and other outlets here in the city and im a respected producer, rather than your small little hood over at baltimore.

Yeah i did the tape deck thing to but i don't use it to elevate my ego mainly because i let my music talk not my equipment.

ha ha, he apologizes at the end of his remarks....

I used to make music on the commodore 64 with fast tracker about 12 years ago. the first piece of equipment I bought was my drumcomputer the boss dr 550 mk2 and a crapy ass beltdriven turntable with a cheap ass mixer, but I managed to learn how to scratch with it.

i apoligized cause its a joke. sorry if i offended you. i do the same sh*t you do. sell beats. help emcees i think are dope. i applaud you for the small strides you've been able to accomplish. i'm not trying to flex any ego because i had it rough. i have three quality albums finished of my own material and no funds to promote them. we're all paying dues in our own way and will be for a long time. and for the record i don't rep baltimore i just live there. if you've ever been there you'd know why. if you've heard my sh*t you know i do my thing and i don't boast or speak out of ego. don't let one joke get to you.:p
