Yup, DAWs are just tools. Sometimes you need a hamner. Sometimes a screwdriver. For me i find Reason works for me and how my brain works. For others it will be Ableton. And others it will be fl. All the programs we have these days are wicked powerful, its more of what daw meets your needs and works with your brain.

Honestly, I think OP is attempting to start an argument amongst the sites' populous.

i use reason6 it suites me and i suite it! and it doesn't look like an arcade video game! i don't care if 9th wonder uses it or any famous producer use's it! i remember headz asking me what is reason? when they thought my beats were from the mpc and realized after i told them that they weren't and
i had stop using the mpc for a while they was shocked
it goes with my workflow I've been using reason since it first came out all the way up to reason6
it made me retire my mpc 2000xL!!

Im also a reason user, it works well for me, my workflow with reason is very very fast. I produced a full beat in about 30 mins the other day.
Ive tried using FL Studio, but because of the impact it has on my workflow, I just havent given it time.
Whatever DAW you go for, stick with it and learn all its ins and outs, that alone can take a couple years. Once you know your DAW, its so much easier to do what you want to do, without being restricted by DAW limitations, because there are usually workarounds to achieve the results YOU want.
I have heard people swear by FL, others by Reason and others by Ableton or Maschine.
Whatever you choose, learn it well, and it will serve you well.

funny, they used to say that about FL :)

There is a difference, partly depending on your setup (ad/da) en type of daw.

Ableton, Reason and FL have noticable sound when purely working itb. For Reason and FL its in the algorhytmn of the filter/eq's and ableton in regards to their stretch engine.

OTB will option you to use a palette of outboard amp or ad/da which will mask those "signature" sounds.

Logic and Cubase always appeared very neutral to me, i assume the same goes for PT and Sonar.

Holy shit did 5 people just agree on illmuzik? Mark it on the calendar. :)

It MUST BE the end of the world.

And yeah, like formant says.. I have always been bugged by the "Sound" of reason. Its trademark sound can be annoying. The timestretching problems are also in Acid Pro.
I just started working with cubase again, still have shit loads to learn about it. But Im using that to mix with, instead of pro tools or acid pro.

Reason 5 and Record changed the EQ's and filters so the sound did change a bit. In fact I have moved from mixing in PT to mixing in Reason 6 when possible because of the new SSL mixer and pulverizer. Ableton certainly does have a "sound" but honestly so does Pro tools. I can almost always hear a pro tools mix.

Well, its one and the same imo, filter/res = eq+sweep

I had quite some fun debates about "signature" sound in ITB. Not saying it doesnt work or that it doesnt even come close to an ssl channelstrip, but the marketing surely works :) I always ask why, as in your case, do you want that ssl signature sound. Mostly people arent that selective and if they were, it wouldnt be just the ssl algorhytmn. They couldve named it otherwise and it still would have a shitload of followers. The debate on summing mixers is almost the same hehe

Thinking itb setups can be really silly sometimes

Well i cant, i never worked with PT, i have noticed some really good productions where i just knew they used Logic. Mostly the tape-delay gave it away but this is exactly where you tick the limit on signature sounds when working itb for the most.

Well yes, I do like the SSL sound. At times however I do want a Neve esc sound and that's when the Vseries really helps. And yes I have used a real SSL :)

I do really like how summing mixers sound. But I find that I can still do a great mix without them. I feel like I will deal and make the best of whatever sonics I am dealt.

My point on the ssl and summing is, you dont need all channels to be ssl to gain that ssl sound. You work itb, get one Superanalogue tool that suits you. Same with api, you want api sound ? get either 2500 or 5500.. not both, same thing.

Ive never used an SSL or a Neve, but I dream about the day I will, regularly.

Look for an averill 1073 clone or an alan smart c1, aurora gtc2.. some clones are better than the real thing.

Unless you're going to record bands (and even then), you really dont want any console when you consider that signals are best retained when nothing is between source and "tape" (straight wire). If it was the 90's then yeah ssl 4k G+ but software these days take care of the old in-line fashion. Logic does our controlroom interfacing, monitor mix, vca automation and everything is handled non-destructive... what more do you want :)

Or you can buy an ssl matrix...
