i hear lots of talk about rappers selling out... what are ur guys defintions of selling out? i personally dont think because you make songs that have mass appeal that means u are "selling out". i hate when people talk about "keepin it underground" and "keppin it real" that party shit wack ......i like to party...alot.....good music is good music.....whatever genre whatevre style...... this applies to vidoes too.. honestly i enjoy most of the vidoes i see today... i would much rather look at ass and tities and phat dances in the vidoe then a bunch of ugly dudes in hoodies with their face all up in tha camera......dont get me wrong i got collections of rap vidoes from wu tang, onxy all that grimey shit and i like that too... but ive heard people automaticaly call everything that isn't underground "wack" and thats just ignorant .... i like it all man............ there is wack commerical shit but there is even more wack underground shit.... what r ur guys take on this?

The selling out issue or keeping it real or whatever always comes up in hiphop topics it may not be in the heading or whatever but here's some examples that are similar IMO.

Holmzini what you are talking about is nothing but a desieas and a lot of people on illmuzik and everywhere else have it but the sad thing most of the people that have it don't have anything because they too busy hating instead of seeing how to get their foot in the door to be sucessful it's like an addiction to drugs you're in denial and before you can admit that you have a problem everything starts to crumble around you so you kick the habbit and it harder to re-establish everything you worked hard for..Now you must work 10 times as hard just to get back where you were

I would say selling out is this:

-MC Hammer: that's what he used to be called, dancing around with baggy pants, then years later he makes a comeback, dressed in all black, changes his name to Hammer all because rap music was going through a hardcore phase.

-UMC's: they came out with songs like "Blue Cheese", dancing around with funny happy rhymes, then years later they come back out, showing up on RapCity wearing hoodies, all black clothing, timbs, etc. Talking about how that "was before".

That's my definition of selling out. Discuss.

You said it all Fade, I totally agree. I feel that sellin' out is a person who goes against what he or she believes in, for personal gain. That's also not keepin' it real. and as long as your keepin' it real for you can't no one tell you your not.

I don't mean to be pretentious, but a friend of mine put it best:

"Selling out is the term people who don't make money in music use when somebody in music is actually making a lot of money."

As some of you grow older, you'll actually see the benefits of "selling out" instead of "keeping it real," and being a starving artist. You have to give and take a little.

Sincerely,
God

I see people watching a commercial with a rapper or some shit and are like " Damn, hes selling out, hes whack now", and i just think if you get offered a million dollars to hold a beer and be on TV, what the fuck you gonna do?

To me it's keepin' it real to yaself. If you feel strongly about how people shouldn't drink beer. Why would you do a commercial sellin' beer for a mill, that's sellin' out to me.

Technically (and this is just my opinion) doing what you have to do to make money in the music industry, if that is your goal, is not selling out. bottom line, i read it throughout this site and many others, music is ENTERTAINMENT! of course someone will say you are selling out if you change to demands, but the music industry is just like any other job market, if you don't change to demands, therefore there will be now demand for you, therefore you will not have a job, which means you will not make money!
that being said, the only way you can sell out is if you go against your beliefs for something you dont believe in. if you respect women, which i hope we all do, and they ask you to be the next too short, and you say ok, that is selling out because you are going against your own strong, personal beliefs to make money, and that is wrong! at the end of the day, i am not looking you in the mirror, im looking at myself!

^^^^^^ Yo, man, thats what I was trying to say. Some people come into the rap game just for the money. I'm not saying I do, which i dont, and I'm not blaming anyone else who does. But if someone starts rappin just for the paycheck, they dont give a fuck what respect they get or how much they sell out. They dont give a fuck about the music and thats whats disapointing.

yo..how is that sidekick?? i been thinking about leaving this sprint pcs vision and gettin one of those sidekicks! is that selling out?? lol

but tim..i agree...people are not really focusing on the music that much anymore, mostly on money. i dont care about the money, if im living and have food and a roof over my head, and bills paid, im good. i think if everyone just got thier (hopefully) somewhat positive message out through music, all that could change though!
