i use a Shure ksm-27. check out the reviews you'll find in google. But more importantly than a good mic, you need a trained voice. if your voice is not refined properly than a good my will exploit your lack of experience.. take it from me. though one day i will exploit the mic !!

fuck all that - i got the mxl 990 for 50$ and its not bad at all - i think what a lot of ppl are messing up on is the room they're recording in and the software/hardware they're using

u got any examples I can hear of the SM58 in action? I'm thinking of getting it for a backup mic and for my laptop (when I get a laptop)

is it any good for instruments or just vocals?

thanks mate

sm58 is good for certain flavours with 'studio' vocals and for some instrumental stuff (it is made to be a live vocal mic and the frequency responce makes it especially good on guitar amps, snares and some other shite)

i could post an example of the sm58 but the isa 428 (used as preamp) is quite 'flattering' on the recordings i have done and as good a sound will be hard to achieve without good preamps.

i reckon go with the mxl like bosta said if you want something for recording rap vocals. (a good one channel preamp would really help also)

There's a couple of Different TYPES of mics...

The Shure SM58 in particular is a "dynamic" microphone (classic round top microphone always seen at live performances ect...)

Then there are "condenser" microphones which are used SPECIFICALLY for vocals... These mics are shaped kind of like a Flat head screw driver except they are obviously a bit thicker and more rounded at the top of the head.

yeah always use a condenser mic for recording vocals in the studio. i like the rode mics and the studio projects mics.

i don't always use a condensor i find different dynamics can be the best thing in some situation for recording rapping namely the shure sm58 and the Sennheiser MD-441

i do however generally use a condensor the cad vx2 and i personally think in the $600 - $1200 for recording raps especially it doesn't really get better than it (can be had on ebay for around $900 us)

this mic has a huge warm sound and the tubes (which are good but i am changing mine) give natural compression which is good for rapping as there are alot of sharp plosive type transients
