that its all for a cause for the relief effort in haiti....rip michael jackson...

which brings up a whole new set of issues...if MJ was still alive, do you think there would have been any autotunes in this effort? How about a 90 sec breakdown for a little hiphop flavor? Here's a good one...if this song was made to help any other country besides Haiti, do you think the song would have been the same as it is now? SMH

Wanna know what's really sad?

When I saw "pure garbage" listed on Fade's comment..I'm thinking "How bad could it be? Not like they're gonna use autotune or something" Wow.... They did....

I completely lost respect for mainstream music of all genres to allow such debauchery in a remake of the greatest collaboration of artists of all time.....

It is so disheartening to hear this.....The message was great...the execution was as much of a disaster as the earthquake itself....

They did have some good singers on it.....But wow..the hip-hop part was crapola....Why are the fake singers allowed here?

2nd, I don't think it mattered if MJ was still alive, the autotune will still be there along with the hip-hop breakdown...

Hip-hop wasn't as prominent in the 80's, which was why there wasn't hip-hop presented in it....I understand that hip-hop has a larger presence in culture, now....But it doesn't mean that you could use it....

You can tell by when the group sings in both videos...that the older group could actually sing as a group...and the new group just tries to keep a tune.....

Steve Perry Killed it on the first one......

i knew this thread would get tired of talkin bullshit about the quality of song and line up of artist and realize that its all for a cause for the relief effort in haiti....rip michael jackson...

I think you can seperate the fact that a song is for a good cause from the actual qualitity of a song. Just becasue something is for a good cause does not mean its off limit from critical review.

Personally the song is pure trash, but i hope it does well, maybe they know something we dont. I hope the whole world hears this horrible song so HATI can get the help it deserves.

No way in HEYELL! Mike didn't put any autotune on "this is it" so I disagree to think that Mike would do it on this song because its popular and not use it in his own music. JMO

Are you kidding? this is a joke right? I'll give you the early 80's but by 85 hip hop was on top.

Doesn't mean that Mj would use the autotune...just means that others would use it in that particular song.

The original WATW concept was made by MJ and L. Richie in 1985. Roger Troutman was around when it was made but he wasn't on the song!?!?! My point is, hip hop was very alive in the 80's and who's to say that they would or wouldn't have used it, Im saying that they didnt and it was there.

dac

*edit- It was an admireable thing to do. The cause and the performers that did this project all came together which took alot of coordination and dedication. I just dont like how they did it. The original WATW was for "BAND AIDE", not a entire country in serious need of help. The 2 do not compare in my book thus the new version should've come on a new level not a revised level. To be totally honest, I would've appreciated something more on the line of a "self destrution" type song with ALL rap in it (but thats just my opinion on that...).

Exactly, id rather say what I really think rather then give it dap becuase of some secret code of ethics. I mean, We Are The World was a pretty bad song when it originally came out IMO, but at least it was original and boasted a higher caliber of artists. My opinion on that doesnt take away from the fact that its for a good cause tho.

I thought it was dope! except for Wayne's part...but overall the song was str8...yall just hatin

Ahhhh......you had to pull that card??? :(

Ah come on dac...

Hip hop was no where NEAR as popular then as it is today....Hip hop gained it's prominence in the 90s...

For example, in the 80s you think VH1 would've played anything affiliated with "urban" music? Look @ it now...having hip-hop honors awards n shit...

Hip-hop back then wasn't "socially acceptable", except for RUN DMC...hip-hop was very "revolutionary" (and im using that term very loosely) back then......Now it is a way to market product to the youth...

hahaha, come on Sucio you gotta brush up on your hip hop facts bro...We both fuggs with this hip hop ish but...as far as VH1 goes, VH1 only played old ish (no rap), Ted Turner owned VH-1(though he called it something else) and sold it to MTV. If you wanted to watch a rap video, you had to go to Yo! MTV Raps and by the time the video got there, it had already been on the streets for months. Then MTV started doing "World Premiere" videos... remember that?

Even still, you couldn't base the popularity of hip hop on TV shows back in the 80's unless youre referring to mainstream ish. By the time TV shows got their hands on hip hop, hip hop had started using samples which was back in the mid to late 80's. By then #1's like Rappers Delight, Sucker MC's, King Tim III, Christmas Rappin, The Breaks, la di da di, and a TON of other all-time great sample free hip hop songs were dead and gone.

Man I could go on and on...hip hop was jumping hard in the 80's bro. TV just hadn't caught up to its fast pace. MTV nor anybody else even recognized West Coast gangsta rap until the early 90's and you know those cats were screaming waaaay before then.

Im not gonna debate it anymore tho, I'm getting out the way for some of these other hiphop historians to speak their peace. All in all, you make good points but you have to be refering to when hip hop went mainstream as far as "popularity but it was popular way before that.

Peace King,

I feel you both on your comments.... When I refer to hip-hop being popular...I meant in mainstream media as a whole....Hip hop was my first love back during the video music box days and it was very big in my world.....
