Could you please tell me what software/equipment you use to EQ your drums?

Thanks.

In the studio I've used Pultec EQP-1As on kicks and snares before, and they work like a charm. Also Avalon VT 737s if I need a warmer snare. Sometimes I'd patch into the Neve 1073 straight from the kick drum tie.

In pro tools it depends what I need it for. The most important things to EQ in a mix is the kick and snare. With the kick, sometimes I only need to cut the very high end off it if someone has a nasty sounding sampled kick, so I'll just use the Pro Tools EQ IIs for that. Usually I'll use the Pro Tools EQ III for the kick to bump up some extra frequencies so that the little systems can hear it thump a little. I tend to back off on using the big EQs for drums, cuz I'm gonna need the processing power later for vocals and reverb and my master fader plugins.

is the Pro Tools EQ really that good? is there any way of getting the Pro Tools EQ as a stand alone piece?

What up Fam,
If your using music software such as pro tools, FL, Reason, Cubase, there are plenty of plugins free for download on the net that can help the sound of your drums tremendously.
You can mix down drums in FL usin some phat plugins and really have the drums fit that pocket. Proffesional Sound Fam.

anyone have the problem of EQing drums in software then putting them in a (physical) sampler and not getting the same thump?

thats my problem i EQ them in cool edit or whatever, load em into the Motif, and they dont sound very good again. so i have to use the Motif's 3 band EQ, which is pretty bad.

It depends on a few factors... 1) You could be going from mono to stereo, which sometimes makes your kick drum thinner. 2) The sample rate of your keyboard may be too low. This doesn't really effect your low-end, but sometimes the high-end of the drums adds some extra thump. 3) How are you monitoring it? Do you think it just sounds different because you may be listening to it differently?

Usually in the pre-production (before mixing and mastering) you shouldn't use EQ at all. If the drums sound decent in the beginning, then just use em until you want to EQ them later. Until then, try to keep the sample as close to how it sounded from the beginning. Remember: the more you do to something at the start, the less you can "undo" to it later, in the mix stage.

I use FL Studio 5. What I do is this:

In the mixer, on my master, I usally use Fruity Band EQ and put it to hip-hop pre-set. Then I name one channel "Track Drums" and I add the Fruity Compressor. I set the compressor to the "Drums" pre-set. I also add Fruity Stereo and set it to "subtle." After this, I take my kick, snare, hi-hat, shaker and direct it to this channel. Which means I have the compressor settings and the stereo settings on the drums

The master is playing in the hip-hop pre-set EQ.

If I use strings, synths, pianos, or other instruments, I add other channels to correspond to them. Then I add re-verb, stereo, delay, chorus and stuff like that. Basically, all my EQing is done with the stuff that comes with FL Studio 5.

My method is weak, I know that, but maybe some of you could direct me towards a better way to EQ my stuff within FL?
