Hi,
Im recording stuff for my album.It is not that usual hip hop but vocal wise you might can help me.

I'm recording vocals on mono,because I like it more when they are mono.I could record in stereo and m/s the shit but well that is not my habbit-when it comes to vocals.

My question:

does it make sense to appy stereo effects on sends to the mono vocal track?

From time to time I like to put a delay etc maybe some ping pong crossed stuff.

If anyone has some expirience or can help Id very appriciate it.

YES reverb usually works best in stereo.

My question other than MS why would you record vocals in stereo? I would also venture that you don't quite understand what MS is.

Effects that create a stereo image make sense. If it not, ex. stereo compressor, you are basically doubling the signal, waste of cpu.

Of coures reverb is very standard.
I ms each drums of mine and almost all elements apart of vocals.
There are many nice tools,I prefer the bx v2 digital.Or basslane a nice for free plug in.
Which means - there are many methods though- I mono some frequencies - lets say up to 300 hz on basslines or up to 1,2 khz on drums - and the rest is in stereo.
You think I do not understand it?
Maybe I mean sth else ,but I doubt I do not know what I do.

ps I know that reverbs sounds nice in stereo,but my point was - does it make sense to put stereo effects to a signal which is mono on its own.
I do so but I am not really sure in my logic.

Vocals should be recorded in mono, much easier to work with.

If you are recording multiple takes from one microphone (either for a chorus, layering a verse, overdubs, etc), you can pan them so they become stereo in the mix while manually adjusting the width and EQ of each panned vocal element to taste so you get the image you want.

As far as getting a ping pong delay effect, the most effective method is setting up a delay plug-in on a send channel, routing your mono vocal to it and automating the timing while the mix plays so you have the delay only when needed.

the ping pong (left/right) delay effect is common in a few delay plug-ins, I know sonitus delay, waves supertap, even fruityloops stock delay can achieve this effect.

What program are you using for vocals sureShock?

about m/s:
m/s is usually best as either a recording technique or a correction tool, like in mastering, but obviously can be used creatively. however, it's extremely easy to fuck up your mix using m/s and tools like brainworx or other eq's with m/s matrixing, or m/s compression like the lat/vert of a fairchild.

some would say to never have the side signal exceed a ratio of 2:1 in relation to the mid signal or risk fucking shit up or losing focus.

anyways, always check the phase and check the mix in mono to make sure your shit translates properly and can at least have the elements heard on all systems, as they all don't play music or audio in 'stereo' i.e. youtube and live sound/clubs

What kinds of reverb are you guys applying.

When I try to add even the slightest reverb, I don't like the echo effect I am hearing. When I listen to other artists' vocals, I don't see where the reverb is coming in?

So far what I have been doing is punching in when I have too. Recording a main performance. Then adlibs to emphasize certain words. I EQ to roll off the bottom end, there us rarely any top end. And then I gate the air. Compress to pump the vocals and try to equal out a lot of the variation in my volume. And then throw a limiter on for any pops and peaks.

What kind of reverb are you guys using and where would you put it in the chain?

And I answered it with YES it does make sense, especially time based effects. Such as reverbs and delays. When you use a send most time based effect return stereo and to get proper depth with time based effects they almost MUST be stereo.

I am so happy you are part of the illmuzik community and I am not trying to be rude, but I answered your question in such a way because it was such a basic question. Not something that someone who undersands M/S would be asking about. I am sorry if I offended that was not my intention.

imo delay>>>>reverb, but i use both

i prefer short plate reverbs but regardless of what type i use, it will be so low that you won't really 'hear' it but, i don't think 'feel it' is the right word or even psychoacoustic, though that is part of it, but you will get a sense of more space when used subtlety and/or barely audible.

eq and filters before or after the reverb can give you even more control over how it sounds and what gets affected.

Get this lil lady in your life and your vocal woes are over!!!!

I've tried many and by far this is the best that I've used to date....throw a gate in front of her and BAM..vocal magic.

Saturation IN and Saturation Out (important for adding warmth coming in or out, Deesser, Doubler (sounds sweeeet), COMPAND (EXPANDER AND COMPRESSOR), DELAY with tempo sync, Tube EQ, 2 black sliders are db gains...gets your vox extra hot. It has STUPID presets...the most you'd do is tweak slightly to taste.

Thanks for that feedback and the video. I will watch tutorial vids until I am blue in the face so that is appreciated.

I looked for that Cakewalk strip and found it but the link I found was for PC versions only.

I found this pretty cool tutorial or walk through of someone's process. Seemed pretty cool.
