LOL. This idea has been brought up numerous times in the past. The first thing is like Freakwncy said, my host doesn't allow third-party chatrooms software, and the one they offer is ass. Second, even though chat rooms are a good idea, my opinion is that it would take away from the forums. Less questions being asked here, they'd be asked in the chat instead.
Keep the ideas coming though, they're always welcome.
Well, you dont need third party software on this site. People that wanna chat can just download a copy of mirc and it will give you a nag screen after 30 days but thats all, its fully functional. Then you just log on to some server (im usually on Efnet myself), and then you can create a new channel by typing say / join #illmuzik. You are now the operator of #illmuzik. You can set the channel to secret so it doesnt show up on anyones room list. About the only thing you will need to take care of is a bot (just a simple eggdrop bot, also a very free small downloadable program) perhaps, that's on the channel 24/7 as an op (or 2 bots) for... safety precautions.
And on your second point, I spend lots of time on IRC, on various channels pertaining tovarious subjects. Now for the people that come there regularly, they just come there to spout bs back and forth to eachother 90% of the time not related to the channel in any way. Just jokin around, messin around sayin stupid shit, just talkin basically. So i personally do not believe a chat room will take away from the forums at all, not everyone digs it (chatting), and usually the chat room is a community within a comnunity.
Now if this maybe helped convice you, and you need help settin shit up just holla, cause its easy for me and I would also really dig an Illmuzik chat room. I can help you setup scripts and shit for your 24/7 ... control valve bots. I wouldnt mind doing it myself, but I'm not online 24/7, so ....
It doesnt even need to be a bot, as long as there is some client on the channel at all times as op, the channel will exist.
Peace out
