Someone in Vibe tried to explain it but I didn't get it. Said his voice was Africa and we all could feel the soul in it.
I think that if vocalist has a distinctive sound and it is paired up with the right music... it will naturally blow up. Gwen Stefani, ODB, Fifty, Banks, Wezzy, Fall Out Boy... etc.
Remember James Blount our whatever his name is. Mr. "You're Beautiful?" I didn't think he could sing at all. but he had a unique voice an used it right.

Though Akon doesn't have a soulful singing voice......he can write catchy ass hooks, and hold a note....That song he did with BoneThugs was dope, and the hook he sings for that "We takin Over" song wasn't bad either....he has had his fair share of wack shit like the 'Smack that" song, but even though I don't like it, you can't deny that its catchy. He's the hit maker at the moment, the guy you want singing your hook if you want your song to get a shitload of radio play.....but like many other "hook" writers he will go away after awhile...

I agree with you there, take pharell....he is another off key singing, hit maker.....every song with him gets play....but he can't sing for shit......I still like the music, it doesn't sound bad to me......but these guys are no Anthony Hamilton....that boy can Sang...

holding a note consists of pitch correct...a plugin available for all major digital audio workstations.
lil wayne's voice sounds like prince rapping during a colonoscopy.
although i do agree akon's voice is kind of catchy, catchiness only goes so far. i could think of other shit in history that was catchy that was not necessaruly the best thing.
