The bill for identity cards had its second reading yesterday and was passed by a majority of about 16...that means, save intervention by the Lords, that all British Citizens will be required to carry a biometric card, for identity reasons. The reason behind this bill is "Twato Bush's" war on terror and the increasingly popular crime of identity theft. How do people feel about being made to provide such personal information such as retina scans, fingerprints, etc? my view is that unless you are a criminal (convicted), no government has the right to your DNA. It is just an excuse to place tags on people. Whatever happened to liberalism and civil liberties?

The US hasnt helped matters, as all people travelling to the US in a couple of years, will require biometric passes to enter the country.

Will these cards, stops terrorism and identity theft?

I think not, real terrorist have phatt cash behind them, and will have no trouble forging the cards...

so is this just an excuse for our leaders, elected by us, to lead us towards a big brother state, where individuality, freedon of speech and expression are severly frowned on...?

These cards clearly won't stop terrorism, I don't understand how anyone would be unable to see that. I guess you shouldn't fear having one if you have nothing to hide, and a surprising amount of personal information is held about us already; but I think this is a bit too far. I think everyone should still be entitled to a certain degree of privacy.

And about the US, they're crazy - when I went there I had to have fingerprints taken [fingers on both hands] and couple of photos of my face. Its more the general attitude of them though - I actually felt I was being treated like a terrorist...although to be fair, I can understand their suspicion [even if it is based on a very unfair prejudice] - we were flying on Kuwait Airways, lol.

fair play LEX, but i disagree with your statement "I guess you shouldn't fear having one if you have nothing to hide" as bollox, that is what hitler, stalin and musolini(sp) said to justify, and control their totalitarian regimes....

I don't think I worded that reply very well........

I was saying that is one point of view - I went on to denounce that argument with a big 'BUT' - I stated I belived this was far too much, definately an infringement of privacy. [In short I agree with pretty much everythign you said].
