if youre bootlegging acapellas off the internet and all that heres the basics...

its a lot of trial and error when it comes to finding the bpm. if youre not blessed with a bpm counter in your DAW (which isnt always accurate anyway) you just have to set your beat at the bpm you think its at, ley it under the song, and change it from there. if you have recycle, chop 4 bars out of the original beat and stick it in there and itll tell you the bpm.

My beats tend to come out better when I do a remix than just standing by itself as an instrumental. This is why I've been avoiding making remixes...I need to know how to make a good beat without having a vocal there...it gives me too much direction.

The first thing I do is that you need to experiment with different drum patterns, that's the most important thing. Once you make/find a drum pattern that fits the vocal and the BPM...then you're pretty much set. After that I just get my main melody in slow it down, speed it up whatever. To me it's a lot easier than making just a beat.
