I make at least a G just off demo beats and small projects....that wasn't enuff to pay my bills when I lost my fulltime so couldn't make enuff cash or have a hit I had to sell off about 80% of my studio stuff but now I am rebuilding all of that....I have had my feet wet in production for awhile it's a matter of having enuff mc's and small labels that buy consistently and you finding projects to get your stuff on........I consider myself more than just a hobbyist because I also have my own publishing company...but like I said, unless you get fired or something like that don't quit your day job to do production unless you get a good contract, get signed or get some good money upfront....

AFD- I have noticed in some of your threads that you are trying to get into this but the finances are holding you back. This is a very expensive hobby and I understand where youre coming from but let me urge you to continue to push forward. I've heard and even judged some of your beats and you are a talented kid. You've won 2 comps and continue to impress me everytime you submit a beat. Keep up the good work.

J-Malice- Alot of things can be read into how a person responds to threads, I definately pick up the vibe that you love what you do. Keep it up, good luck with your company and your pursuit to make your dream a reality.

BigD- Like I said with J-Malice, you can tell when someone is truely into this and it wouldn't surprise me if you told me that you have already done some major work. Your responses to threads are just that good. I have noticed how well you are familiar with gear, you seem to know alot about the fundamentals and even the more complicated side of producing and production work. Sorry to hear that you had to sell alot of your gear but I understand. You gotta do what you gotta do. Good luck to you also and keep sharing that knowledge in your head.

peace,--dac

Dog Ima put it like this Im serious about my music, but for production Im only producin when I get tired of other people guessin what kind of tracks I would love to rip. The thing is I just wanna rap and be able to provide for my very large family while doin it. Right now I been talkin to some smaller companies like Zone Records and World Bound, also i talked to a dude from Atlantic after this battle at the engine room, and I talked briefly with a dude from rap alot who neva got back to me. When I find producers i can work with my mind state isnt like "I screw you, you screw me" Im more like "we can help eachother and if I make it you make it".

Hey you got a great point Goldy_C, I think starting with a smaller company only helps you in the long run. I think that the competition is just too much in the larger companies and they have a greater chance to reject good talent. On the other hand, they have the money to finance your projects better than the smaller independent ones. Do some research and see what they are doing with other talent under their wings. If they display confidence in them and in you, you've got a good chance on being successful with them and your success will determine their success. Like you said..." we can help each other..."

good luck,--dac

i am very serious about music as a whole.
besides being a producer, i also collect music. i have been involved in this world for a long time, and i have learnt that fame is counterfeit. if you remember the scene from 'Scratch', where dj shadow is talking from the basement of lost records, you'll come to a conclusion that music's fate is to be forgotten. one way or another, your record will be put aside, and maybe (JUST MAYBE), an enthusiast like ourselves will cop it one day. i want people to hear my music and appriciate it for what it is, but i truly don't care about making $$$.
i wish the best of luck to all of you.
may your wishes come true!

Dac on that note I hear you thanks for the compliments I ain't really done anything major though LOL ...you get as much local or small projects out with your tracks....imagine if you were an artist that had all of his masterpieces in his crib......no one would ever know what he had and with that hot beats can stand alone but hotter beats always have some good lyrics and good emcees...I have seen A&Rs that listen to beats alone...but it is hard for them to grasp the type of project sometimes that it would fit with unless you get either an emcee or singer to bless the track to give it some type of usable concept.....so push your stuff, if you get a good team (you can trust and work with) push your best shidd.....The concept for peepz nowadays that are doing street level guerilla marketing is to use known tracks for mixtapes......well get a rack of your beats together get them copywritten and do mixtapes with your beats on em....that is cutting against the grain but get your work heard by as many as possible.

up an comin... for now producin is just a hobby since i really only started makin beats a few years ago.... im much more serious about the bsiness end of the music though as i am cuurently building up my music industry resume with intrenships and field work .... im workin on a few albums but im takin my time and makin sure theyre hot... i thinkim gonna follow big d's strategy and push the cd like a mixtape... i hate when cats put out mixtapes with known beats on them.. its so cliche ... anyone with a mic aand a tape recorder can do that

I have noticed that alot of the people here are serious about their music and seem to want to get in the industry. There's ALOT of valuable info being shared in the forums. I hope that you all are really taking this info and using it to your advantage. Fade has provided us with a means to gain the knowledge, info and the tools that are needed to atleast get started in the right direction. The moderates and support team provide things like New Products, Articles, Industry News and so on...The members of ILLMUZIK share their knowledge which is also beneficial to those that want to pursue a career in the music industry. As with any information, it is only as good as we apply ourselves to it. I encourage you all to keep up the good work and keep sharing your knowledge. Check out the Articles section too.

Also, a very good way of displaying your talents is in the beat this and battle that competitions. Fade, the other moderators, the support team and some members are really pushing for you cats to be successful. I know for a fact that there are talent scouts from several A&R's looking and listening to you guys. Be involved and keep doing your best.

Finally, all you cats that got involved with the ILLMUZIK CD, I want to say thanks personally. Some thought of that as just a fun project which it was to some degree but think of the possibilities if it blows up! That could open some major doors for all of us at the ILLEST. Think what would happen if this CD gets so popular that a major label wants to purchase the rights and send all the artist into a BIG time studio with Big time engineers to put down the next ILLMUZIK project. The talent is here, the beats are here, the info is here, put it all together and something BIG will happen.

Keep voting and giving us your feedback. This is a serious survey!

Hey,

I do it purely for tha enjoyment of creating something that I can be proud of as end-product...Ive been knee deep in musical influence since i was a little kid cuz my pops is a musician and for tha 18 yrs growin up underneath his roof ive had tha fortunate opportunity to learn how to play guitar, listen to some awsome records, and have an infinite amount of cd's to experiment with and play - not to mention live gigs almost nonstop in my living room.
Plus, my sister is a singer and so that only leaves my mom out of tha loop since just about everybody in my family is invloved in music besides her..........All i know is that music is so powerful and influencial in every persons life that i cant ever see a reason to put it down.
Tha shits like a drug - if im not sittin down bangin one out, im either cruzin down tha street feedin my ears on my prided stereo, or goin to sleep with my headphones on cuz i cant fall asleep with out my tunes.LOL.

In closing, Ive thought about becoming more serious about my musical talents numerous times, but im also a student and have about 2-3 yrs to go and ill have a degree in multi-media/communication design.
Im serious about finishing school since ive come this far to jus quite now, and tha thing is - im really not sure how to get tha attention of tha big shots beyond what im doin here and in my bedroom/limited-ghetto-studio with a MC or two and some small-time networking in my local area???..........SO!!, Im jus gonna keep makin good music with my friends and enjoy what im doin, while self promoting myself of course - and if something comes then it comes....Im jus gonna cross my fingers and keep showin improve, and jus build and continue to build.

afriquedeluxe-keep them sick beats coming.

duecemade-I feel ya, I came up pretty much the same way...my family was into music and it trickled down to me. I remember my dad telling me not to mess with his Johnny "Guitar" Watson albums. I didn't have money to buy my own so I would sneak into his albums and take them in my room and practice scratching and mixing on them. There was this song back in the day call "Supersperm" by Captain Skyy that had an sick drumline in it. KRS-ONE used it on his song called "You Must Learn". Anyway, I used to rip that beat up and my dad would get pissed at me for messing with his albums and ish. Overall, I know that he's glad that I was doing that rather than hanging out in the streets, getting in trouble, so it was all good.

Yeah, I think initially - my pops was lookin at me makin beats like it was jus another thing that i found interest in on tha computer...But after i started really puttin it down and buyin mags and books, and always stayin on tha computer and bringin over mix tapes for him to listen to - he started givin me props for what ive been accomplishing and he sees what im doin now and how much i really love it...

DueceMade, word!
having a musical family is an amazing thing!
my background is quite similar, since my father has been involved with jazz his whole life... and thank god for that. otherwise, i wouldn't have the chance to get into music in the first place.
