Thinking of ditching the turntables and going all digital. Thoughts?

ok, I am going to give it a month and see if I can live without vinyl. And if after that month I really didn't need to use any of it I am going to sell 90% of my vinyl and my decks.

lol, you wont need them until after you sell them. If you hold on to them and keep them packed away, the way things are going, they'll be worth some good cheddar when your children grow up. =)

Agreed. Keep them....Even if you don't use them, some will be collector's items.

But that defeats the point. Its having stuff to have stuff. And most records are not worth anything, and never will be. That's why you can buy them at the thrift stores 2 for a dollar.

Also I don't want to move with them again, not saying I am moving anytime soon. But I will move out of this house at some point.

Can you give me an example otherwise? Seriously, I am not trying to argue. But I can get about any vinyl I could ever want for under $20

Well for sampling I agree, you can find tons of vinyl for cheap, but not all vinyl is equal. For example, I picked up Tom Scott's Honeysuckle Breeze some years ago for about 20$, and then resold it on e-bay for 230$. Or buying a reggae single for 1$ and selling it for 100$. There is value for everything, but it depends on the market, buyer, and their desire to have something. I'm very selective when I buy stuff now, and some of it is not easily found for cheap, so sometimes I have to pay more for something.

Everytime I go to a mall I find the record store and the rare item section. Once I find what I want, I write down the name of it and digitally dig for it when I get home. Most of those items are jazz music and some go for up to $150 on CD. Imagine what that would be on some clean vinyl. I got that idea from my local record store, I was searching for Wendy and Lisa's Discography (the 2 chicks that was with Prince back in the Purple Rain days...). They made several albums and some of their work is extremely hard to find. Anyway, the record store told me that they can download it for me in 10 mins., not thinking, I said OK. Their entire studio recorded discography cost me roughly $200 but I wanted it. Later on, I realized that I could have gotten it myself simply from digging.

Digital digging is one thing, putting your hands on the original vinyl is another. So yes, some vinyl can bring in some good paper. I agree with Pug.

yea I know what your saying, but most of the vinyl I go looking for is really strange stuff. Spoken work stuff, old piano music, orchestral, stuff from the 30's. Things are not really worth that much. You sure can make lots of money flipping vinyl, no doubt. But honestly I fear becoming a pack rat. When I hear DJ shadow has like 60k+ records and dre had 80k+ I'm like ugh....I don't want to be that guy you know. And I am trying to get my entire rig really small. I may even set up a storage server JUST for digital digging. IDK. Interesting times for sure.

Not a bad idea, that way you don't really lose your collection. I've got several external hard drives full of music, plus 1 as a backup just in case. I've even got one that I'm putting all my favorite movies on.

ok, update. I am pretty much convinced that I am doing this. I also decided to go all virtual with my guitar stuff as well. Honestly I have 6 amps and I gig with one and then the rest never get used. I just use the POD in Record and I use Vandal and Amplitube. So all my pedals and amps minus one bass amp are going as well and I will replace it all with one stealth I/O pedal. This is fun

Wow, I am actually losing sleep over selling my vinyl. I cant do it, I just love vinyl. WOW But the amps are gone ha ha.

Interestingly enough my Stanton 120 has been acting up for months and suddenly it started working perfectly ha ha guess it knew that it was shape up or ship out lol.
