Ok, now this is a question that people passionate about rap tend to dislike answering...for whatever reason. What I wanna know is, who else do you like that isn't from the urban music scene? Should be interesting to see who's feeling what...don't be ashamed (unless its N Sync)!

Personally, a few of the people outside of rap that I like include...

- Muse: They can really play good music. The singer has an awesome voice and they generally make good music. I quite like Muse because its rock but with an actual purpose...not just screaming.

- Fatboy Slim: Gotta respect this hit maker. He's pretty much a production genius when it comes to making tunes you wanna dance to. I have a great deal of respect for him.

- Frank Sinatra: Yep, he's a classic. He brought out a lot of good music during his career and there was just a lot of charm about him and his music that I really liked.

Well, should be interesting if people respond to this..

Hey,

Journey : The first tape I ever bought back in '83, it's what got me interested in music and synthesizers.

Metallica : Their first three albums were so frigging awesome...fast, tough and full of beans.

Joy Division/New Order : These guys were doing amazing things with synths and production back in the 70's, then brought it into the 80's by marrying traditional instruments with electronic ones.

Vangelis : Listen to the soundrack to 'Blade Runner', it will do all the speaking for me.

The Prodigy : 'Music for the Jilted Generation' is still a favorite, great production using synths and samplers, the whole thing was done by a single person, yet it sounds like a bunch of people.

The Smiths : Amazing band. Musically and technically no one could touch the musicianship of each member, great lyrics, great production. The singer's a twat, though....

The Church : Another amazing band from Australia. Great melodic guitar.

Iron Maiden : Their album covers alone were worth the money spent on the record...fun, progressive metal, duelling guitar leads, great riffs, amazing bassist, cool lyrics about the supernatural, historic personalities, and WWII. And a mascot.

Shit, I don't even listen to rap music that much, come to think of it...

Phil Collins/Genesis : excellent drummer and decent singer...

Frank Zappa : incredible composing skills

Vangelis : I like his synth sounds

Led Zeppelin : tight guitars/drums

Serge Gainsbourg : versatile composer

Rabih Abou-Khalil : nice fusion of western and arab music

Jerry Goldsmith : excellent film music composer

and all kinds of Classical music (old and contemporary),

of course I could name tons of Funk,Soul and Jazz artists but that would be too easy ...

well lets see.... i like this topic.

i have to confess that i like that "doo wop" sound of the earls and drifters, and i think van morrison is one of the nicest cats from the 60's...creedance clearwater revival could show marvin gaye a thing or two about soul..... any of you ever heard a song by them called "just a thought"? very simple but well played music.... U2 is one of the best bands ever, then you have oasis and the cranberries....i do listen to older soul, etta james, harold melvin, etc., .... plus i listen to a lot of christian worship music... anyhow thats my list.

hey phil- there arent many cats with more skills then phil collins! we're talking Prince territory here... this guy plays EVERYTHING!

i dont think there is a "similarity".... he sounds like he's delibrately trying to sound like curtis.... i liked the music that he sang to better then his actual songs.

Im realy fealing Cold Play, they have like a U2 quality about them. But my favorite non urban artist of all time are Nirvana. I think they are the best rock group ever, most people would disagree.

Oh yeah the White Stripes do some dope stuff....the bass line on 'Seven Nation Army' is heavy! I'd like to add that I also like a lot of jazz and soul music eg. Ottis Reading, Issac Hayes, Barry White, Dionne Warrick, Earth Wind and Fire, etc. But I didn't include them at the start of the post cause I still consider soul and jazz to be urban music...you might not agree but thats how I feel.
