Yeah, the thing that samples have that a keyboard can't have is that live feel cuz most of the samples we hear were recorded live so it sounds better. And I wasn't really feelin sampling when I first started creating beats because it made me feel like a biter, using someone elses hard working, soulful, good sounding piece of art, ya know? It made me feel guilty cuz if someone thought that one of my sampled beats were dope, I couldn't say thanks cuz it isn't truly MY own piece of art, I just chopped it up, tweaked it, and added drums and bass. That's why I started composing when I first got into beats.

Using Samples Is Dope... Like When I First Started Making Beats I Used Samples Chopped them Up and Flipped 'Em... But The Art Of Looking For Samples And Digging And Listening To How Music Was And Is Put Together Has Helped Me In My Overall Development In My Production.. Now I Compose or Sample or Throw Them Both Together And Kill It... So I Believe Sampling Is A Vital Part Of Hip Hop And Production...

cosign

it takes a nice mixture of both nowadays

what keyboard or sound module composed beats would you consider great or classic from the past?

one thing I've noticed is sampled beats have a timeless quality to them, they seem to have more longevity

aw man, is this where this thread ended up. original compositions vs. sampling? i'ma make this short, in terms of the hip hop culture, they both have there places. as long as cats continue to bicker and about which is better, the music will suffer. this a very old topic needless to say, but if it's in yall to talk and give your own personal points of veiw, then due so with respect to the perspectives different than yours. stay open, as it will only make the music better.Peace.

oh...and i dig and sample by the way :D

I'll give you the Outkast joints but 90% of them other joints u named aint classic,

they're classic maybe on a regional level, but not nationally

I dont think that sampling is the only good hip hop

DRE has the other 10% and he still samples a lot too, but he puts so much keyboard on top you cant tell

Im not turning this into a sampling vs. composition thread becasue i do both and both take skill and creativitly, im just trying to get cats to realise that their "prefernce" for what is classic and what isent is just their opionion,

Wu tang and rawekwon are just as regional as 8ball and MJG and goodie mobb,
Yall just dont realise it casue its all you listen to, again open your eyes.... Scareface, UGK, goodie mob aint classic's but raekwon cuban links is??? your out ur mind. 8ball and MJG have been puttin it down since 89..
You need to get out of that east coast mentatilitiy....and open ur mind to other aspects...

again sampling is cool but there are PLENTY of hip hop classic's that aint sampled
And we dident even touch on any of DJ QUIK's stuff or any of the OLD school stuff that was all synthed out...(i need love LL cool J)

maybe I missed something, but I never mentioned Raekwon or Wu Tang although they do have some classic stuff

now if I were to speak on something thats sampled and classic in all regions it would have to be some Jay-Z or Nas

Scarface got some classic ish keyboard and sampled

my only problem is the MCs on keyboard beats, 90% of them aint sayin nothin, not expressing a view or anything just rhyming nursery school style or yelling

NOTICE I SAID 90% NOT 100%

P.S. LL cool J I need love was sample based, which version u talkin bout

I listen to GOOD MUSIC period regardless of where its from

really thats all it boils down to.......preference, but everyone in music sample based and composed must respect there roots

Exaclty glad we can agree on that, sampling is the foundation of hip hop. Thats how it started..
But what do people sample?? They sample musicans that composed and created their own music. With out composers there would be nothing to sample.

So people should have a mutal respect for both...

yeah we definitely need composers, samplers are not sampling todays composers although I feel what u sayin

I dont think future samplers will be sampling the composers of this era, but who knows what could happen

what I would really like to sample is a band with old school flavor in a old school setting nothing can touch the authenticity of that sound

Nah man Wu Tang has platinum albums to their credit, you can't move a million plus being regional. I ain't from NY and I was a fan of the early Wu records. Method Man has been in movies, RZA scored Kill Bill, regional artists don't do that. They definitely have a greater following in the north, but people all over know who they are, they've heard C.R.E.A.M. Most people in Chicago never heard of UGK prior to Big Pimpin', and 8Ball and MJG are only slightly more known up here, but probably the biggest song they were apart of up here until "Don't want Drama" was 'Sho Nuff with Tela.

I respect non-sampled music, but sampling has most definitely had the grearest influence on the genre. Even those artists you pointed to as examples of classic non-samplers have sampled, like Outkast.
