(This has been on my mind for a while)

I have noticed that online (as well as other places) people are using the word N**ga more frequently. I am interested to know why?? Is it imitation???

I am especially interested to hear from people outside the African American community who use this world

Personally, the word bothers me a lot, epically when people outside the African American community (black’s whites or Hispanic’s)
But I’m not hear to judge you, I honestly would like to know why. When I try to ask white or Hispanic people about the word face to face, they are to afraid to admit they use it in front of me. Plus I don’t know to many white people.

I have also noticed a trend of white boys using this word amongst their peers. Somebody really needs to explain that shit to me.

If u honestly use the word, step up, be a man and state your reasons.

Like I said before im not starting this thread to start arguments, I want to have a constructive conversation

I think that the fact that we are online should give people the ability to expresses their opinion freely without them having to worry about getting fucked up.
(Believe me I will fuck somebody up over this shit in person)

FYI
I would be a liar if I said I didn’t the N word. When I get around friends and family sometimes it just slips out. Also I have noticed that the further north you go, the more people outside the afro-American community use the word.

To be frank, i have never used the word NIGGER. Why should I? :headscrat:

1. Origin: Nigger
This most offensive of words in American speech dates back to the late 16th century, although the modern spelling doesn't appear until two centuries later. The OED2's earliest cite of the modern spelling is from 1786 in Burns's Ordination. (The Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang, however, claims that this is an editorial error and Burns's original manuscript uses the older niger.) The obsolete spelling niger dates to 1574. It comes from the Latin meaning black. It shares this common root with negro. The offensiveness of the term has increased over time, especially in the 20th century. Two 16th century quotes that are commonly cited in dictionaries are from scholarly tracts. A 1700 quote by judge Samuel Sewall uses the term in a denunciation of slavery. Gradually, however, polite discourse increasingly used the term negro (which dates to at least 1555) and nigger became relegated to the vulgar tongue, increasing in offensiveness over the centuries.
So for example, when Mark Twain uses the word in Huckleberry Finn, by the standards of his day he is not being especially offensive (although even then it was a term that would not be used in polite society), but is using the term as a marker of class and socio-economic status of the characters who utter it. In the 20th century of course, it has become extremely offensive. It, along with cunt are just about the only taboo words in American discourse today (it's interesting that the most offensive terms have strong racial or gender discrimination components). About the only acceptable use is in Black English when African-Americans use it to refer to themselves. (There is a similar reclamation of the word queer among homosexuals to rob the term of its offensiveness of the term by using it to refer to themselves.) It is etymologically unrelated to the word niggard.

Class : I don't touch the word. I don't get close to it.

But a lot of kids (white kids) say it, usually the young teenagers. For example, my girl's little sister (she's seventeed) says it ALL THE TIME. And her ass lives in Simi Valley, an area where there are probably a handful of african americans living there. It really disgusts me, but I chalk it up to her ignorance.

I honestly feel the reason "non-african" kids say it is because of RAP and it's heavy use of the word. Kids are impressionable biters. They think it's ok, without knowing any of the real/offensive meaning behind it.

Nothing funnier, disgusting, and more offensive than a bunch of white boys saying nigga this nigga that.

I'm half Korean and half white.. I joke all the time about asians, haha, that's cause it's my culture and I CAN.

Kind of like how you can make fun of yourself/your friends, but if an outsider does it's offensive.

i hate it wen white kids say it but because of how popular hiphop culture is that word is everywhere. In popular culture today for young kids hip hop is like the coolest thing around everybody mimmiks the lifestyle everyone wants to be a part of it because look how cool rappers are portrayed to be they all have hella money, all the bitches, ride the dopest cars, have the nicest cribs look hard as fuck, wear cool clothes hella rebelious, makin money on their own terms, evrythin young kids who don't know who they are yet see that and strive to be like it cuz of how cool it loojks. the word nigga is in 99% of all rap songs and used so much by rappers kids wanna be like the rappers so they say what they say no matter what it is. I personally use the word wen i'm chillin with my friends and and joking around but it jus comes off so fake to see some white kids in my town with baggy ass fubu gear usin the word seriously in adressing eachother

Ill give u guys a little perspective

As most of you guys know i had a chance to go to african last nov, and it fucked me up to see these black kids over calling each other niggas just as much as it fucks me up white boys over hear do it. They had no context of what they were saying. They were just imatiting what they see on TV(like most people do)

It really hurt me though to see africans calling themsevles Nigger. That was a word that was forced upon african americans. But those african kids are Choosing to remain igronarnt buy using that word(same for black people all over the world). That shit really hurt...

Classic, I feel that the word is inherently bad and should be respected and never used. How many millions of slaves heard that as the last audible notation right before they were killed or raped or worse.

Having saying that.. The word is part of a culture now that is completly seperate from it's origins.

There was a time when i was younger and I said that because I've never participated in racism i shouldn't be condemed, or limited, for somthing I had nothing to do with.

If fact, it could be argued that if I conceded to the disuse of "Nigga" that I would be admitting that I, being white, had something to do with racism.

When i was a kid hiphop was everything to me, like some sort of movie or dream. I was livin it to the fullest. I gave a fuck less if 1 more human being misjudged me or thought bad of me. I am a fighter and that's the reason i love hiphop. But I wanted to reply in this thread because in the last year i've heard a few white people say Nigger instead of Nigga and didn't even realize what they were saying. It just goes to show that this world is full of idiots. And since I'm careful who i give my time to, it's not my problem.

Peace Classic

p.s.

--That first sentence means i don't think anyone, black or white, should use it out of respect for the innocent death of millions under slavery or indentured servatude.

--Also, Hiphop was introduced to me by my best friend who was black and i never used that word around him for liek 10 years, then i started wilin out. In-fact i didn't even like hiphop when i started hangin out with Russ cause he was into gangsta shit. but i was addicted to east coastish stuff from the jump. When i was 7 i'd sleep with a portable cassete player under my pillow and listen to Nucleus - Jam on it cassette. So i guess that may have opened the doors to ill hiphop for me.

Me personally i use the word because thats the way i was rasied....Im not saying it is right but when all the folk u have been around all of ur life use the term its hard for u not to pick it up too...now when other races use it it does bother me but at the same time i cant be angry because it has been put out ther like a term of endearment by what white america sees as an reprensentation of black people(Black Rappers,Comedians, Actors etc....)....Once again i will say i dont think that makes it right, but u can see why other races feel it is allright to say that and everything be cool

I mean i respect your opionion O but it aint that black and white, black people have been using the N word for ALONG time. White people dident really start trying to use it untill the early 90's when hip hop really spread to the suburbs and beyond. Its a cultural thing, and a white person saying the word just dosent hold the same context as a black person

I seriously doubt that any white(or non-black) person in here would come up to me on the street and say..

Whats up nigga

(if u did ur a brave motherfucker)

To me it seems the only time non-black people use it , is within their close circle of friends(inclucding blacks that let them use it around them). Or when they can remain ananous. Once they get outside of that confert zone and they are around people they dont know.
alll that nigga shit stops , becasue they know what realitiy is........

I know plenty of all races and I don't know any whites personally that use the word. Most blacks I know use it often, and a large percentage of hispanics use it. The way I see it is the hispanic population that has no understanding of the word's historical context. They see blacks using it in a friendly manner, and that is the only time they hear the word, so they assume that they too can use it. Blacks have co-opted the word from racist whites in order to castrate it. Since then every white I know is afraid to use the word. Yeah, I've seen dumb white kids think that "I am so down with so and so, that I can use the word with he or she because they are my black friend. I want to show them that I am so comfortable with them, and they should be comfortable with me, that I can and will use a word that most feel that I shouldn't use." Which of course is a bad assumption. These kids understand fully the context of the word, but they just want to be the exception. I know of no black friends that would allow such a presumption. The hispanics that I have asked "Why do you use that word, and so much?" Reply, "Its not bad" or "HIspanics are just as discriminated as blacks, so we've earned it?" Whatever. The only cases in which I allow whites or hispanics to use the word without confronting them is within the context of a hip hop quotation. Which alludes to the previous post of why they think they can use it outside of a rap quote.
