The number of Black-owned record stores shrank from hundreds in the '60s to a fraction of that today. Meanwhile, vinyl is now the No. 1-selling pure-album format in the US.

That's a shame because like it mentions in the article, the distribution is not the same, but I think it's definitely the industry. This is why a store like Fat Beats was so unique in carrying everything Hip Hop but that was ages ago. I think the overall demand has really shifted though and now a lot of collectors are looking for special editions and all that.

Yeah that's the other thing. It's not necessarily about race, it's just how things are now. That article is also probably trying to push the race narrative when it's not the only reason for the downfall.

It's sad because record stores are a great place to find stuff but unfortunately so is the internet. I can find classics by just sitting here in my underwear.

And on the other hand, the shit's too expensive nowadays anyway. It's not the same when I would just go into a shop and find 12". Now it's all albums and they're all special editions which are way overpriced.

I was in a shop in Toronto a few years ago and the selection was really good but it was all curated records from the owner. Which means the prices were nuts. Nice shop but way too expensive.

Yeah man definitely, been so long since I bought vinyl I forgot about those prices

12" were the best. $5-10 and there was always something new, plus acapellas and remixes. But I'm not spending $40+ for some special edition stuff.

I paid £20 for a one sided 12 " white label once. Never again. Wasnt even hip hop, it was a UK garage track. Was an acetate too, so deteriorated quickly. Fucking waste of money. The charity shop finds made up for it. Now my vinyl is just collecting dust. Serato made it obsolete for djing. Using control vinyls on turntables gets the best of both worlds, but I havent dj'ed in years. Did some mixes on a controller back in 2012, just not the same as vinyl.
