in some songs, i noticed have a small hi hat (or is it a ride?) right in front of a snare sometimes, does that serve a purpose at all? and if so, why? thanks.

Maybe you mean an open hi hat?

I use it all the time. If used right it can fill space, and create a nice groove.

But you know it doesn't have to serve a purpose as long as it sounds good.

That's an hi-hat... See, there's a pedal that you can press with your feet to close the hi hat (both cymbals touching, tight) if you let go (not completely), the hihat will open... the cymbals will be touching... not tight... that's why you'll hear a sizzle... Tssssssssssssss
